FRENCH

After introducing the topics that will be studied in Term 1 and reviewing the expectations in class (regular compulsary homework, oral participation, etc.), all grades are now learning new vocabulary and new grammar rules. Lots of floor games are used to memorise the words and a class competition has started in Grades 3/4 and 5/6.

  • Prep

The Prep students are using French puppets to practise saying 'Bonjour" Je m'appelle...' (Hello! My name is...). They have started watching short videos in French (the adventures of the Barbapapa family) to become familiar with the French accent. At the start of each lesson, they sing 'Faites une ronde' ('Make a circle') before sitting down on the floor. Our first topic is 'family members'.

  • Grades 1/2

In Grades 1/2, the students are revising numbers 1 to 10. The first vocabulary topic is food and the grammar focus is the proper use of articles 'a', 'the', 'some', depending on the gender (feminine or masculine) of nouns.

For example:

- a strawberry = une fraise (fem.)

- a salami = un saucisson (masc.)

- the strawberry = la fraise (fem.)

- the salami = le saucisson (masc.)

- some ice cream  = de la glace (fem.)

- some salami = du saucisson (masc.)

  • Grades 5/6

After revising French body parts, we are now focusing on describing a person's face, using full sentences. In a few weeks, the students will be ready to play 'Guess Who?' in French.
