Celebrating 20 Years of VSSEC

2026 has been a milestone year for the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC), as we celebrated 20 years of inspiring students through hands-on STEM education.

Since opening in 2006, more than 257,000 students have participated in VSSEC programs, and in 2026 alone we have already welcomed bookings for over 15,400 students. This continued growth reflects VSSEC's ongoing commitment to delivering engaging STEM experiences that inspire curiosity and a passion for learning.

A highlight of the year was our 20th Anniversary Celebration, current and former staff, partners and supporters came together to recognise the people and partnerships that have helped shape VSSEC over the past two decades. The evening included a High Recognition Award presentation, commemorative cake-cutting ceremony and an opportunity to reflect on VSSEC's journey and the impact it has had on Victorian school students. We were also pleased to welcome Regional Director Chris Thompson and former Principal Jill English, whose leadership and support have contributed to VSSEC's success. 

Visit from the Governor 

As part of the anniversary celebrations, VSSEC was honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Governor of Victoria, Professor Margaret Gardner AC. During her visit, the Governor met with students and staff, learned about the Centre's innovative programs, and presented appreciation awards to several long-serving members of the VSSEC community in recognition of their dedication and service.

Katherine Bennell Pegg

Another memorable highlight was the visit of Australian astronaut and 2026 Australian of the Year Katherine Bennell-Pegg, who worked with primary and secondary students throughout the day before taking part in a Girls in STEM Q&A with local secondary students. 70 students participated, leaving inspired by Katherine's experiences and the possibilities of a future career in STEM and Australia's growing space industry. 

Teacher Professional Development 

Supporting teachers has also remained a priority throughout the year. In June, VSSEC hosted a two-day professional learning workshop for approximately 30 middle leaders, providing practical strategies to strengthen STEM education within their schools. A follow-up session will continue this learning later in the year.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead for the rest of 2026, there is plenty to be excited about. Our flagship Mission to Mars program is currently undergoing a major redevelopment, including a redesigned Mars surface and new Mars lander. Later this year, VSSEC will also launch the inaugural Space Pathways Forum, connecting Year 9 and 10 students directly with Australia's space industry to explore future study and career opportunities.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, we remain committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators for many years to come!
