Health and Wellbeing

A Year of Wellbeing and Personal Growth

It has been a wonderful year of learning, reflection and growth for our students. Throughout the year, we have focused on developing essential life skills that help us navigate everyday life with confidence, kindness and resilience. Together, we have explored the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing, while taking time to reflect on who we are as individuals.

Our classrooms have been filled with meaningful conversations about feelings and emotions, as well as the importance of respect, resilience, responsibility and celebrating learning success. We have explored the values of acceptance, equality and inclusion, recognising and celebrating the unique qualities and differences that make each of us special.

Students have also reflected on gratitude, their personal strengths and the things that make them unique. Through these experiences, they have continued to develop their communication skills, show empathy and support one another, helping to foster a positive, inclusive and caring school environment.

We have learned that taking care of both our minds and bodies helps us feel happier, healthier and more confident, allowing us to approach learning and everyday challenges with a positive mindset.

We are incredibly proud of all that our students have achieved this year and look forward to continuing our journey of self-discovery, wellbeing, positivity and personal growth in the year ahead!

Discussions that we regularly have about improving our Health & Wellbeing

  • Understanding our emotions – Recognising that it is okay to experience a range of emotions and learning healthy ways to understand, express and manage them.
  • Resilience – Learning to persevere when things get challenging, overcome obstacles and bounce back from setbacks.
  • Kindness and respect – Treating others and ourselves with kindness, care and respect, and recognising the importance of how we make others feel.
  • Positive self talk – Encouraging ourselves, believing in our abilities and reminding ourselves that we are capable of achieving difficult things.
  • Mindfulness – Taking time to slow down, breathe deeply and focus on the present moment, rather than worrying about things that may never happen.
  • Managing overthinking – Understanding how overthinking can affect our mental health by increasing anxiety, making it harder to concentrate and impacting our ability to solve problems. Learning to focus on what we can control and let go of unnecessary worries.
  • Seeking support – Recognising that asking for help is a strength and knowing that it is always okay to talk to someone we trust when we need support.

Through these important discussions, our students have developed a deeper understanding of themselves and how they can care for both their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. They are learning that when we nurture our mental and emotional health, we feel more confident, build stronger relationships, enjoy our learning and are better equipped to make a positive difference in the world around us – every way, every day!

Sophie Taylor, a hockey player from the Victorian Institute of Sport, shared her inspiring personal journey and powerful messages with our students in a way that truly resonated with them. Through her honesty and engaging storytelling, Sophie highlighted the importance of resilience, mental health, self care and maintaining a positive mindset, leaving our students with valuable insights and lessons to carry into their everyday lives.

Sophie spoke about:

  • Resilience – Developing the ability to overcome challenges, bounce back from setbacks and keep going when things get tough.
  • Kindness – Showing compassion, care and understanding towards others, while remembering to be kind to ourselves.
  • Managing anxiety and stress – Exploring strategies to manage worries, navigate stressful situations and maintain our emotional wellbeing.
  • Learning from mistakes – Recognising that mistakes are a natural part of learning and provide valuable opportunities to grow and improve.
  • Positive self talk – Becoming aware of negative thoughts and learning to replace them with encouraging, positive and supportive messages.
  • The power of words – Understanding the impact our words can have on others and recognising the importance of communicating with kindness and respect.
  • Being confident in ourselves – Learning not to place too much importance on what others think, and having the confidence to stay true to our values and beliefs.
  • Coping with change – Building the skills to adapt to new situations, embrace change and approach the unknown with a positive mindset.
  • Fairness and respect – Treating everyone with fairness, empathy and respect, while valuing the feelings and perspectives of others.
  • Celebrating our uniqueness – Embracing the qualities that make us who we are, having the confidence to express ourselves and recognising the value of our individuality.

It was an incredibly valuable and inspiring experience for everyone. We left feeling uplifted, more positive and grateful, with a renewed understanding of the importance of caring for our own wellbeing, supporting those around us and embracing the qualities that make us unique. Most importantly, we were reminded that every day is an opportunity to learn, grow and become the best version of ourselves.

Looking Ahead: Our Continuing Wellbeing Journey

Next year, we will continue exploring ways to care for our minds, understand our emotions and develop the skills we need to feel our best each day.

  • Emotional health: We will continue learning to recognise and understand our feelings, while developing positive strategies to express and manage our emotions in healthy ways.
  • Emotional regulation: Understanding our emotions helps us make positive choices, especially when things don’t go as planned. We will continue using the Zones of Regulation to identify how we are feeling, recognise what we need and explore strategies to help us return to our “Green Zone,” where we feel calm, focused and ready to learn.
  • Managing stress: Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, and that’s okay. We will explore how stress affects our minds and bodies and practise different strategies to help us relax, manage worries and navigate challenging situations with greater confidence.
  • Building social connections: Strong friendships and positive connections help us feel safe, supported and valued. We will continue nurturing friendships, encouraging one another and creating a strong sense of belonging within our classrooms and school community.
  • Developing healthy relationships: We will keep practising kindness, respect and empathy by listening to others, considering different perspectives, communicating thoughtfully and respecting one another’s feelings and boundaries.
  • Expressing our feelings and seeking support: We want every student to know that their feelings matter and that it is always okay to speak up. We will continue building confidence in expressing our emotions, asking for help when needed and recognising that seeking support is a sign of strength.
  • Mindfulness and meditation: We will continue exploring mindfulness and meditation as ways to slow down, connect with the present moment and develop greater calmness, focus and self-awareness.
