Market Day 2026 - Cashless - Prepurchase your vouchers

Market Day is back for 2026 and is on Friday 11 September. For 2026 the event is cashless, so food and other items need to be purchased using a voucher system.  All vouchers are valued at $2 and combinations of these can be used to purchase items on the day.  There will be very limited ability to purchase vouchers using card on the day.  Vouchers can be purchased using the following trybooking link https://www.trybooking.com/au/event/1642649 and will be distributed to students prior to Market Day. 

Prepurchase of vouchers closes, Monday 7 September at 2:00 pm

There will be no Canteen facilities available on Friday 11 September.

French Club

This week in French Club, we learnt about the long-standing tradition of French mime artistry and explored how mime has become an important part of French culture and performance.

We watched a short film about the famous French mime artist Marcel Marceau, learning about his unique style and contribution to the art of mime. We then had the opportunity to try some mime techniques ourselves, using movement, facial expressions and gestures to communicate without speaking. It was a fun and engaging session that gave us a greater appreciation for this unique French art form.

French Club is welcome to Years 7-12 students and runs every Monday Lunchtime in A6.

Year 12 Health and Movement Science Excursion

On Tuesday, the Year 12 Health and Movement Science classes had the opportunity to visit PhysXrehab in Cromer, where we spent the day learning about ACL injuries and how they are managed throughout the rehabilitation process. It was a great experience to take what we have learnt in the classroom and see how it is applied in a real world sports rehabilitation environment.

Throughout the day, we learnt about the different stages of ACL rehabilitation and the importance of gradually rebuilding strength, power and confidence before an athlete can safely return to sport. One of the highlights of the day was getting to experience ice baths. Which we learnt are used following an ACL injury to help manage muscle soreness and inflammation during rehabilitation.

We also had the opportunity to use force decks to conduct countermovement jumps. The force decks measure the force produced when jumping and provide practitioners with information about an athlete’s strength, power and any differences between their legs. This allows physiotherapists and strength and conditioning coaches to track an athlete’s progress throughout rehabilitation and help determine when they are ready to progress to the next stage.

Overall, the excursion was a great opportunity to get hands on experience and gain a better understanding of how ACL injuries are treated and managed in elite and recreational athletes. It also helped bring the HMS syllabus to life and gave us a valuable opportunity to consolidate the key treatment and management concepts we have been learning in preparation for the upcoming HSC.

A proud moment: the Francis Webb Poetry Reading

Representing Francis Webb’s former schools, Dario Leotta (St Pius X College) and Jasper Nugen (Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham) joined 12 distinguished poet-readers to celebrate and honour the poetry of their esteemed old boy, Francis Webb, one of Australia’s greatest poets.

Dario opened this year’s reading with The Hero of the Plain. Following his reading, the event’s MC, Dr Toby Davidson, Senior Lecturer in Literature at Macquarie University, remarked that Dario had 'really raised the bar high' for the subsequent readers through his superb reading and insightful commentary on the poem.

Reflecting on Webb’s poem, Dario (Year 7) said:

'The poem is very moving and sophisticated, particularly because Francis Webb was only seven years old when he wrote it. Even as a child, Francis had a mature understanding of sacrifice and death, and this really shines through in the poem. It is amazing how he describes a brief scene, yet gives the reader the sense that it forms part of a much larger and significant story. Overall, I really enjoy this poem because it speaks to me of sacrifice, heroism and bravery expressed through small actions.'

It was a proud moment for the College as our first reader, Dario, set the tone for a memorable tribute to Francis Webb’s poetry.

Pius vs Mercy Year 12 Netball Game

The annual St Pius X vs Mercy Catholic College Year 12 exhibition netball game took place this week, bringing out the best in both sides' school spirit, providing lively competition, and the chance to claim bragging rights on the court. With coaches Oliver Costain and Toby Moran shuffling the rotation across four quarters to keep everyone happy, Pius took the unusual step of fielding a deep 28-player line-up ready to give it everything. The result unfortunately went the other way with a 7-5 loss, but the match did not disappoint with clear unyielded commitment from all who participated.

All in all, it was a great afternoon, despite not coming away with the win due to some interesting match officiating and scoring protocols. Special mentions go to Hugo Hart, who was named the Coach’s MVP, and to Niall Jaffery and Zach Brown, who both scored a hattrick. This event couldn’t have happened without all the amazing teachers who organised the event, along with both the Mercy and Pius leadership cohorts, and a big shout out to Archie Turner and Lucas Hoffman for their dedication with the camera.
