Principal's Welcome
By Dale Mills
G’day Parkhill community,
Thank you to everyone who came along on Tuesday for our school Open Morning and Evening. It was wonderful to see so many families coming along as a part of Education Week, to see what learning looks like in the classroom and engage in some activities. Your attendance sends a subtle but powerful message to your young people about the value and importance of education.
The theme of Victorian Education Week this year is ‘Showcase your school’. As a part of the evening, our School Captains Mia and Darcy spoke about what makes them excited and proud to come to school at Parkhill. They touched on friendships, leadership, the community, extra-curricular opportunities, learning and support, and their wonderful teachers. The pride, passion and confidence with which they spoke really showcased the great culture at Parkhill PS. What is clear is that while we may be small, students and families at Parkhill still have access to a full and extensive range of fantastic experiences, opportunities and learning.

Yesterday, we took time to stop and acknowledge the fabulous work of our Education Support (ES) staff as a part of Education Support Staff Appreciation Day.
The work of Education Support staff is vital to the success of our school and the strength of the learning programs that we offer. It requires great amounts of flexibility, persistence, initiative and compassion. The roles of ES vary greatly within a school; from supporting individual students with additional needs, to operating the front office, from running our learning intervention programs to maintaining our school grounds, from providing support and care in our first aid room to overseeing and improving our school ICT infrastructure, from supervising the yard to providing wellbeing and welfare programs. What a broad and varied skillset!
We know that all of these roles make a massive difference to our school, and so on behalf of the whole Parkhill community, I say thank you to all of our Education Support staff. Thank you to Angelita, Helen, Zoe, Tom, Sarah, Widya, Archer, Corinne and Lina for all that you do every day to support our school community!

Regular attendance at school is essential to ensure learning is not disrupted and to provide building blocks for the future. All our learning is cumulative and when students are absent, they develop gaps in their learning which, over time, can become increasingly difficult to overcome. Attendance at school also helps children to develop important social skills such as friendship building, teamwork, communication skills and a healthy self-esteem.
Students arriving late miss vital instructions for the day, especially as a part of our literacy block, which makes it difficult for them to get the most of their learning. This interruption also affects the other students in the class as teachers stop to set them up for the day. Your support here is greatly appreciated!
We are now accepting enrolment applications for students beginning school in 2027. If you have a child of school age starting school next year, please contact our school office to receive more information. We are more than happy to help you with the application process or to book a school tour. If you know of any families who have children ready to start school next year, please encourage them to get in contact with us so we can share with them our wonderful Parkhill community and how they can become a part of it in 2027.
Coming up this Sunday, we have our community working bee from 9am to 1pm. It would be great to see you there!
Kind regards,
Dale
