School Holidays: Rest, Play and Connection Matter
As we head into the school holidays, it's important to remember that children thrive when they have opportunities to rest, play, connect and recharge. After a busy school term filled with learning, friendships, activities and routines, holidays provide valuable time for children to slow down, enjoy unstructured play and spend quality time with family and friends.
While it's tempting to keep children busy every day, research shows that downtime is essential for children's wellbeing. Simple activities such as visiting local parks, riding bikes, reading, creating artwork, playing board games, exploring nature or enjoying family walks can help children develop creativity, resilience and emotional wellbeing. Giving children opportunities to make choices about how they spend their time also helps build independence and confidence.
For families looking for additional activities during the break, Maroondah City Council offers a variety of school holiday programs designed to keep children active, engaged and connected. These include sports-based programs such as basketball, netball, tennis, volleyball and multi-sports activities through Maroondah Leisure, as well as creative workshops and arts experiences at Wyreena Community Arts Centre. These programs provide opportunities for children to build new skills, make friends and stay active in a safe and supportive environment.
