News from the Garden

Over the second half of August and the start of September there has been lots happening every Monday in the garden.

We have been setting up Greenhouses to grow seeds. Unfortunately, we have had setbacks due to wind, and we are learning about the best position to put them. Despite some setbacks we have been making progress and are starting to grow a lot of seedlings ready for spring planting.

Over on the North side of the school, we have been learning how to safely place stakes into the ground as well as planting native trees to continue the growth in that corridor of the school.

The students and I have been putting in a big effort to clean up a lot of the rubbish and excess materials in the garden to make it tidier and more functional. 

We have been putting our wheelbarrow licenses to good use. Grade 3, 4, and 5 students have been helping to transfer fresh soil from behind the kitchen to near Gumbaya.

Lastly, over the last two weeks a combination of classes have done a huge job to prepare the garden bed near 1K and 1V for potato planting. There have been classes weeding, transporting compost, spreading compost through the soil, setting up stakes, digging holes, planting potatoes, and finally watering them in. In all, at least 5 classes must have contributed directly to this task.
