Digital Technologies Leader - Lisa Geary
Our St Bernard’s designers and engineers have been working hard in the STEM Lab this term, creating a variety of prototypes that demonstrate the scientific concepts they have been exploring. The STEM Lab continues to be a hive of activity, with students working collaboratively, sharing ideas, helping one another and problem-solving together.
Each year level has been given a different design challenge that allows students to put their scientific knowledge into action.
The Prep students have been investigating push and pull forces through a range of hands-on activities. They have explored how different forces make objects move and have put their learning into practice by creating and testing straw rockets.
Year 1/2 students have taken on the challenge of designing and constructing playground equipment that demonstrates push and pull forces. Their first project was to design and build a working swing. They have shown wonderful attention to detail and creativity in their designs and are producing some impressive prototypes.
Year 3/4 students have been challenged to design and build a marble run that demonstrates their understanding of friction, momentum and gravity. Students are discovering how changes to the slope, surface and design of their runs can affect the way their marble moves.
Year 5/6 students have begun designing and constructing their own working carnival rides to demonstrate their knowledge of simple machines. Each prototype must incorporate one or two simple machines, such as pulleys, levers, wheels and axles or inclined planes.
Sustainability is also an important focus in the STEM Lab. Students are encouraged to make thoughtful use of recycled and reusable materials wherever possible. Our new Makedo toolkits have been a fantastic addition, allowing the students to connect and construct using cardboard. I am so proud of the high-quality designs, and impressive models being produced across all year levels. Many projects are still under construction, and I can't wait to see the finished creations!
