A huge thank you to all our students and families for the wonderful effort that went into our Book Week dress-up celebrations! It was fantastic to see some many creative costumes and much loved book characters come to life in our Hall. We know that putting costumes together takes time and effort, and we really appreciate the enthusiasm of our students and families. Everyone did a fantastic job!
Our book week celebrations continue throughout the week, with plenty more opportunities to enjoy books, stories and the joy of reading together. You might like to check out the 2026 Book of the Year winners here: https://cbca.org.au/2026-winners/
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is also drawing to a close. Students have done a wonderful job reading and recording books throughout the year. Please make sure that all completed books are uploaded by Friday 4 September so they can count towards this year’s Challenge.
Inquiry:
Last week was National Science Week and our students continued to explore our Inquiry unit of ‘Energy in Action.’ Across the school, students have been investigating different forms of energy through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Prep-2 students are exploring sound and vibrations, discovering how sounds are made and how they travel. Year 3/4 students are exploring heat energy and how heat moves and changes materials.
Our Year 5/6 students are learning about electrical circuits and celebrated Science Week with an exciting Mad About Science incursion, giving them the opportunity to put their scientific knowledge into action.
National Science Week was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the curiosity, questioning, experimenting and discovery that are already such an important part of our Inquiry learning this term.
Numeracy:
Our students continue to build their mathematical thinking through a range of rich and challenging learning opportunities.
This year, students in Years 5/6 are participating in the Maths Olympiad, which provides opportunities to tackle complex mathematical problems and develop strategies for approaching unfamiliar challenges. The focus is not simply on finding the correct answer, but on thinking flexibly, applying mathematical knowledge and persevering when a solution isn't immediately obvious. In Years 3/4, Maths Explorer provides similar opportunities for students to extend their problem-solving skills through engaging mathematical challenges. Students are encouraged to explore different approaches, explain their thinking and develop confidence when working with more complex problems.
These programs complement the mathematical learning happening in classrooms across our school, where we continue to place a strong emphasis on reasoning, problem-solving and developing confident, capable mathematicians. Here is an example of type of question our Explorers are solving:
