Fremantle Biennale

Intensive English Centre students and local artist Shupiwe Chongwe exhibited this compelling installation, Sanctuary City, at the Fremantle Biennale's Cheap Tongue gallery November 13-30. In planning this project, students were asked to question what sanctuary means to them. The students, at various stages of learning English and from many different countries all over the world, first had to discuss the definition of sanctuary itself. Sanctuary City was modelled on the concept of a place where all can feel safe and protected.
