STATE TRACK & FIELD

Congratulations to all our students who represented VSC at the State Track and Field Championships held at Lakeside Stadium on Monday the 20th of October. There was an onslaught of rain which made for challenging conditions at the start of the day for Robbie in his 3000m race and delayed the throws program. Once the rain cleared, it was an incredible day on the track and in the field events for our athletes.

Robbie managed to grind out a personal best time of 9:17.96 in the 3000m, this was then followed by Harnoor in the 100m who placed 2nd with a time of 13.33s which is even more impressive considering Harnoor does not have a background in athletics.

Next up was Indigo in discus who managed to launch the discus an impressive 24.08m narrowly missing out on a podium finish with plenty of potential.

Matthew was up next at the high jump, which brought a rush of adrenalin for all competitors and spectators. A majority of the field were still in the mix at 1.55m, Matthew then cleared it and progressed to the next height of 1.60m. Matthew, along with 3 others had their attempts, and he was the only athlete successful in clearing 1.60m leaving him as the last one standing. Matthew then had 3 attempts at 1.63m but was unsuccessful – this resulted in Matthew being awarded state champion! Another impressive result by a student who does not have a background in athletics.

Anna took to the high jump mat in another hotly contested event, and flew over the bar standing at 1.55m earning herself 4th place in the U16G, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.

Thomas burned his way around the track in the 800m clocking a personal best time of 2:12.35 and earning a 5th place finish in the U14B, followed by Leana in the U17G who also ran a personal best time of 2:31.71 and placing 5th at her debut state track and field championships.

The 1500m were the next events on the track which saw Jared run out an impressive time of 4:42.66 in a highly competitive field placing 7th. Thomas continued his fantastic run of form with a personal best run slashing 11 seconds off his personal best with a time of 4:23.63 and placing 4th overall. Robbie and Harry featured in the U17B event with some great efforts seeing Robbie place 5th in 4:09.30 and Harry place 8th in 4:17.48.

It was then time for the relays. Many training sessions were held under the watchful eye of Mr Clements refining changeovers with the students and without his expertise these results would not have been possible. The under 13 girls were the first to take the track, Sami got out to a solid start, followed by Starla burning down the back track who then passed the baton to Dheeksha who flew around the bend and then passed the baton to Harnoor who charged down the home straight launching the team from 6th place into 3rd place earning a well deserved bronze medal with a time of 56.10s.

The under 16 girls were the final VSC event on the track. Zara from year 9 stepped up to fill the gap and ran a fantastic opening leg handing the baton to Grace. Grace charged down the back straight holding strong with a great handover to Yana who flew around the bend. The final changeover wasn’t as smooth as we would have hoped, however Lila was able to bring it home and comfortably hold onto 3rd place. Years in the making and a well deserved state medal for this team with a time of 54.94s. Well done!

EMR FINALS

Year 7 Girls Hockey

What an amazing effort by our girls, today qualifying for the State finals. Only three teams competed in the regional finals, with perennial bogey team Balwyn drawing 1-1 with Blackburn in the first game during a torrent of rain.

The weather gods looked upon us favourably, as the rain cleared for our game against Blackburn. After falling behind in the first half, our defence set up a veritable wall with Metisse, Joyce, Caitlyn and Macy intercepting nearly every opposition foray forward, and Shaivi in goals clearing out the rest. At the other end, we managed to square the ledger by half time and ended up winning 2-1.

The final game of the day was played in sunshine, and in a nail-biter we defeated Balwyn 1-0. Our defensive wall was resolute, even as Balwyn threw everything at us in the second half. After the game, the referees commented on how even the day was and that it was one of the best days of hockey they had seen this season, with high levels of sportsmanship on display, despite the tense struggles by each team to prevail.

Year 7 Boys/Mixed Basketball

The year 7 basketball team represented the school with pride ending the day with two wins and a loss. They started the day against Rowville in a tight contest up until halftime but unfortunately the shots didn’t fall in the second half and Rowville ran away with it. The next two games against Lilydale High and Templestowe were one sided contests with the boys much too strong resulting in big wins. All of the boys played well and with a bit of hard work we can go one better next year!

Year 8 Boys/Mixed Table Tennis

A huge congratulations to the year 8 Boys for their efforts at region last week. Starting off extremely strong in our pool; we barely dropped a set against Wantirna, Templestowe and Upper Yarra. There were some great skills on show and the team was really working well together.

Then we went into our semi-final against South Oakleigh who put up a fantastic performance – tying up the heats going into the doubles matches. Thankfully, the Vermont boys eked out a set lead and won a hard-fought victory into the grand final!

Alas, despite an enormous effort across the board from the team, Balwyn proved themselves to be too good on the day. The boys showed great determination in the face of strong opposition and should be so proud to bring home the Runner Up prize. It was a wonderful day and I would like to commend all those who played and those who came to assist. And of course, a huge shoutout to Josh for his passion and expert guidance for everyone on the team. Keep up the excellent work boys!

Year 7 Boys and Girls Table Tennis

On Friday 17th October, VSC was represented with boys and girls Year 7 Table Tennis teams.

Our boys team, made up of Sai, Aidan, Evan, Justin and captained by Vansh, won each of their pool matches to progress through to the semi-final.

Here, they came up against Balwyn, winning through to the grand final 4-2.

We faced East Doncaster in the grand final, a team made up of experienced players who train multiple times a week outside of the school setting. Our boys played extremely well, picking up points and games throughout the singles and doubles, ensuring East Doncaster had to play at their best to beat us.

Runners Up on the day – congratulations! The spirit and effort you put in throughout both days of play, is a credit to you all.

Our girls team made up of Miheli, Inaaya, Hanvitha and Sahana also won their pool matches to progress through to the semi final. Here they came up against Brentwood, the eventual runners up, and despite our best efforts, the girls were not able to progress to the grand final. They were awarded third place overall, again a fantastic effort.

You also displayed great spirit and effort and were fully supportive and willing to take on the scoring and umpiring duties for the boys grand final.

A very big thankyou to Josh, who trained and selected the players prior to the event and provided coaching and feedback throughout, ensuring the players got the best out of themselves.
