WORLD DAY OF THE POOR - SUNDAY 16TH NOVEMBER
Pope Leo XIV first apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te was signed on 4 October, 2025 and officially presented on 9 October. Dilexi Te translated means "I have loved you" it is also a fitting follow-up to Pope Francis's Encyclical Dilexit Nos on the human and divine love of the heart of Christ. Dilexi Te focuses on Christ's love for the poor and asks the Church torenew its commitment to those most in need which, he states, is not optional for Christians. Below is a brief insight into the Vatican’s publication of the Holy See paper as written by ESCI Catholic Dialogue Schools Newsletter:
"This is not a matter of mere human kindness but a revelation: contact with those who are lowly and powerless is a fundamental way of encountering the Lord of history. In the poor, he continues to speak to us." (5)
The exhortation tells the faithful not to remain in the realm of theory but that love for the poor must become concretised in "frequent and practical acts of charity" (119). Persistent inequalities need to be concretely addressed and accompanied by a change in mentality that can have an impact at the cultural level. The foundation of this change in mentality is Christ's love, which "breaks down every barrier, brings close those who were distant, unites strangers, and reconciles enemies" (120).
