Dear St John’s Community,

I am sorry about the weather, but from what I've been told, the Father's Day evening still went off without a hitch and was well attended. Thank you so much to everyone who pitched in to make it a great evening, from Ms Patton, who organised the presenter, to the parents who helped with the stall and over the evening, and the staff who pitched in to help out once they realised we needed a few more hands.

Father's & Special Friends Day

While we should always celebrate anyone in our lives who has a positive influence on us, this weekend is about the male figures in our lives. I thought it would be a good time to share reasons why we need to celebrate these role models in our lives.

Affirms the Value of Relationships

Taking time to celebrate dads, grandfathers, uncles, stepdads, mentors, and other male role models shows our kids that family and community relationships are worth honouring.

I grew up without a father, but I always had positive male role models around me who I looked up to and had positive relationships with.

Promote a Sense of Belonging and Security

When kids see the people who look after them celebrated, it builds a sense of identity and security. Knowing that they're part of a family or a caring community helps them feel supported and cared for.

Encourage Gratitude and Appreciation

Days like this give kids the chance to express thanks, which nurtures empathy and kindness.

Model Healthy Relationships

Recognising positive male figures in their lives helps kids with good examples of respect, care, and love. It sets a standard for how to value others, helping them grow into respectful and nurturing adults.

Support Emotional Development

It's healthy to reflect on feelings and learn how to express them, especially for boys, saying “I love you,” “thank you,” or “I appreciate what you do for me” strengthens emotional intelligence and communication skills.

Celebrates Family Diversity

Acknowledging our “special men” includes children who may not have a father present, reinforcing that all family structures are valued and that kids can and should celebrate any supportive male role models in their lives.

I'm told the Skipathon was fierce today, and all the students' hard work practising and preparing for the day in the weeks leading up to the event certainly paid off. Winners of the bikes will be announced early next week. Overall, we raised about $2500 for the pickleball equipment and to go towards finishing the long jump pit, which is under construction behind the flag poles.

Congratulations Blue House who were the overall winners of the day.
