Honouring Our Fathers: Reflections of Divine Love and Strength

This coming Sunday, our nation pauses to celebrate Father’s Day. Across Australia, it is a special time to express our gratitude for the dads, grandfathers, stepfathers, uncles, and father figures who bring strength, comfort, and guidance to our lives. Within our Catholic school community, it also offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the spiritual significance of fatherhood and the ultimate model of fatherly love given to us through scripture.

At the very heart of our faith is God the Father (Abba). Throughout scripture, God’s relationship with us is defined by unconditional love, constant presence, patience, and protective care. In Jesus, we see the perfect reflection of the Father’s heart. Jesus walked through life showing us what true servant leadership looks like by healing the sick, comforting the brokenhearted, and putting others before Himself. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He deliberately began with "Our Father," reminding us that we are all deeply loved children of God and inviting earthly fathers to mirror that same self-giving love.

Scripture provides us with extraordinary examples of fatherly faith and devotion that continue to guide us today. As the foster father of Jesus, Saint Joseph represents quiet strength, humble obedience, and steadfast protection. Faced with uncertainty, he trusted God’s plan and dedicated his life to guarding, providing for, and teaching young Jesus, standing as the ultimate patron saint and inspiring standard for fathers. Similarly, in the parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus shares the image of a father whose arms are always open wide with forgiveness and grace. This powerful story captures the essence of Christian parenting: a commitment to love patiently, forgive readily, and celebrate every step a child takes along their journey.

In our everyday lives, fatherhood takes shape in countless small, quiet acts of selflessness. It is found in late nights spent helping with homework, early mornings driving to weekend sports, gentle words of encouragement after a hard day, and the lived faith shared around the family dinner table. Fathers and father figures carry a vital role in forming young hearts, teaching resilience, integrity, kindness, and moral courage through their daily actions. By living out their faith with devotion, everyday dads show our young people what it means to put God and family first.

As we celebrate this Sunday, let us keep all fathers in our prayers, asking God to grant them wisdom, strength, and joy in their vital vocation.  May God’s comforting spirit wrap around every family, and we wish a very Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures in our school community!

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for our fathers and father figures.

Bless them with the strength of Saint Joseph, the patience of Your grace, and the guidance of Your spirit as they lead our families in love.

Wrap Your comforting peace around all who miss their fathers today.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Faith and Learning: Understanding "Fidelity in Relationships"

As part of our commitment to Catholic education within the Armidale Catholic Schools diocese, our school community is guided by key principles that shape how we teach, learn, and grow together. One of these core foundational values is Fidelity in Relationships. While the word fidelity is often associated with loyalty and trust, in our Catholic context it carries a much deeper, richer meaning. Fidelity in relationships reflects God’s unwavering, steadfast love for each of us. When we practice fidelity, we commit to building authentic, respectful, and supportive connections within our families, our classrooms, and our broader school community.

For our students, learning fidelity in relationships means building authentic connections by practicing honesty, kindness, and empathy in their everyday interactions with peers, teachers, and family members. It involves nurturing trust and loyalty by teaching children to be dependable friends who stand by one another, resolve conflicts peacefully, and honor their commitments. Furthermore, this principle calls us to extend our faithfulness beyond human relationships to include caring stewardship of God’s creation—respecting our environment, our school resources, and the world around us.

For parents and carers, home is where these values are first lived and experienced. Children learn how to navigate relationships by watching how the adults around them listen, forgive, support, and communicate. By partnering together—home and school—we create a safe, faith-filled environment where every child feels valued, respected, and known. Implementing the Angelus Prayer at St Patrick's

Bishop Murphy has recently instructed all schools within the diocese that he would like staff and students to pray the Angelus daily. This traditional Catholic prayer honours the Incarnation and invites us to pause for a moment of reflection during the day.

At St Patrick’s Primary, we are currently working on a structured timeframe to implement this practice meaningfully across the school. To begin, we are focusing on developing our staff members' understanding and appreciation of the prayer by using it to open all of our staff meetings this term.

Following this initial staff preparation, we look to introduce the Angelus to the wider school community. Our current plan is to begin practicing it as a whole school when we gather in the morning, with an expected rollout scheduled for mid-Term 4 or the beginning of next year.
