Maths News - St John's Leads in Maths Practice

This year, our school had the exciting opportunity to participate in a pilot program focused on Mathematics assessment. The experience provided us with valuable insights into how assessment data can inform our teaching and help us better understand the learning needs of our students.

After implementing the assessment back at school, we came together as a staff to analyse the results. We identified a clear area for development: fluency with basic number facts and computation.

Using this information, we have begun exploring new approaches to support students in developing greater mathematical fluency. This includes whole-class incremental practice and paired practice through fluency partners, giving students regular opportunities to revisit, practise and build confidence with number facts and computation.

We were also fortunate to share our Story of Practice with other schools across Melbourne. Sharing our journey allowed us to reflect on what we had learned, celebrate the progress we had made in such a short time and connect with other educators who are working towards improving Mathematics outcomes for their students.

We look forward to continuing to build on this work and supporting our students to become confident and fluent mathematicians.

A spotlight on learning Maths at St John’s

Lots of engaging Maths lessons have been spotted around the school!

During the explicit instruction phase, students are given the opportunity to practise the skill being taught with guidance, worked examples and concrete materials, before moving onto independent practice.
