Level 3 & 4

It was fantastic to have everyone back to school last week. Our students returned settled, positive and ready to learn, and it was lovely to see reconnections, conversations, laughter and excitement fill our week.

Beginning our term with online Parent Teacher Interviews was a valuable opportunity to celebrate the student’s achievements and discuss their growth.

Term 3 promises to be filled with rich learning experiences, new challenges and opportunities for growth. We are looking forward to continuing to support our students as they develop their skills, confidence and independence!

Literacy

Spelling

In Spelling, students will continue to explore the 111 Rule in Phormes.

The 111 rule is; when a word has one syllable, one vowel and one consonant at the end, the final consonant is often doubled before adding a suffix.

Eg  grab, grabbing, grabbed

Reading

Our mentor text for the first two weeks is Malala's Magical Pencil by Malala Yousafzai.

This inspiring picture story book will support our exploration of our new CBL big idea, POWER, as students consider how one person's voice, actions and determination can create positive change in the world.

Synopsis

Malala's Magical Pencil tells the story of Malala Yousafzai's childhood in Pakistan and her dream of having a magical pencil that could solve problems and make life better for others. As she grows older, Malala realises that she does not need a magical pencil to make a difference. Instead, she discovers the power of her own voice and courage as she speaks up for the right of all children, especially girls, to receive an education. The story highlights the power each person has to create change.

Writing

Students will learn about Malala's life and achievements through biography study. They will discover how she bravely advocated for girls' education, survived an attack by the Taliban, and went on to become the youngest-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Her story demonstrates the power of courage, perseverance and standing up for what is right.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

* ask your child to identify words in the books they’re reading that have the 111 rules in them

* ask your child to retell three important events from Malala's life.

* discuss with your child the qualities Malala has that helped her achieve her goals

Maths

Grade 3

Multiplication and division

Students will continue developing their multiplication and division strategies, building confidence in solving increasingly complex number problems efficiently and accurately.

Grade 4

Addition and subtraction.

Students will strengthen their addition and subtraction skills by applying a range of mental and written strategies to solve problems involving larger numbers.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

Look for opportunities to use any of the four processes (addition subtraction multiplication division) in real life - such as sharing food equally, calculating quantities for recipes, working out the total number of items in equal groups, working out change or adding scores during games and sporting events.

Encourage your child to practice their times tables regularly by saying them out loud, writing them down, or through quizzing.

Multiverse on Mathletics and Hit the Button (website) can be a fun interactive way to practice and strengthen number fact knowledge and work towards automaticity

CBL (Challenge Based Learning)

This term, our Challenge Based Learning (CBL) Big Idea is Power.

Students will explore different forms of power, including personal power—the ability individuals have to make choices, influence others and create positive change—and the role of power in government and decision-making within our communities.

Through rich discussions, inquiry and learning experiences, students will investigate how power can be used responsibly to support fairness, leadership and positive action.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

*Encourage conversations about how people can use their voice, choices and actions to influence positive change.

*Discuss who makes decisions in your family, community and government, and how these decisions impact others.
