Grade 5

Reading
This term, we finished reading Waves and explored the many different journeys people have made to Australia throughout history. Students developed their understanding of migration and the reasons why people leave their homes to begin new lives. We discussed the challenges, opportunities, and emotions that often accompany these journeys. Through class discussions and activities, students made thoughtful connections between the stories in the text and Australia's diverse community today.
Writing
In Writing, students have been creating engaging non-fiction narratives about people making their journey to Australia. They combined factual information with narrative techniques to bring historical and personal experiences to life. A key focus was including self-reflections to show the thoughts, feelings, and growth of their characters throughout their journeys. Students should be proud of the creativity, empathy, and effort they demonstrated in their writing pieces.
Mathematics
This term, we have been learning about time and developing our skills in reading, interpreting, and calculating with different units of time. Students practised solving real-world problems involving timetables, elapsed time, and time conversions. We also enjoyed a range of fun mathematical activities connected to the current Football World Cup. These activities allowed students to apply their mathematical thinking while exploring statistics, scores, fixtures, and data.

A reminder that a Compass event is now live for our excursion to the Melbourne Museum next term. Please ensure you complete the required permissions and payment by the due date.
