Reading – A Ghost in My Suitcase
This term, students completed their class novel, A Ghost in My Suitcase by Gabrielle Wang. The story follows Celeste, a young girl who travels to China with her grandmother and discovers family secrets, cultural traditions, and her own identity. Throughout the novel, students explored themes of family, belonging, courage, and the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures. We discussed how Celeste grew in confidence as she faced challenges and learned more about her family history. Students reflected on the key events, character development, and the messages conveyed by the author.
Writing – Persuasive Writing
Students completed a persuasive writing piece exploring the importance of family history. They developed clear arguments, supported their opinions with evidence, and used persuasive language techniques to engage their audience. Students focused on structuring their writing effectively, using strong introductions, well-developed arguments, and convincing conclusions. It was wonderful to see students making personal connections and reflecting on how family history shapes identity and belonging.
Mathematics – Patterns, Algebra and Spreadsheets
In Mathematics, students investigated number patterns, algebraic expressions, and the use of spreadsheets to organise and analyse data. These learning experiences help to develop students’ understanding of relationships between variables, recognising and describing patterns, creating and solving algebraic equations, and using digital technologies to represent mathematical information. Students applied their problem-solving skills to identify rules, predict outcomes, and communicate their mathematical thinking.
Humanities – Geography of Southeast Asia
Students concluded their Geography unit by presenting their research projects on countries within South East Asia. They explored geographical features, climate, population, culture, and the impact of human activity on the environment. Students demonstrated their research, organisation, and presentation skills while sharing their learning with their peers. The presentations showcased the depth of students’ understanding and their ability to communicate information effectively.
