Auslan News

We are so excited to be back in Auslan for 2026! This week, we welcomed our newest Auslan learners, our Prep students. They had a wonderful time learning about the importance of eye contact when communicating with Deaf people and discovering how our hands can be a powerful form of communication.

Grade 1 students explored a range of devices that Deaf people may use to access sound, including cochlear implants and hearing aids. They even experienced what listening through one might sound like, which sparked great discussion about how tiring listening can be and why Auslan plays such an important role in supporting equitable communication.

Grade 2 students investigated how different devices and tools can support people with a range of abilities, and who might benefit from each. This led to many thoughtful conversations about the importance of asking how someone prefers to communicate and treating everyone with kindness and understanding.

To finish each lesson this week, students had lots of fun dancing their way through a game of ‘Green Light, Red Light’, building their visual awareness skills along the way.
