Learner Agency and Effective Learners

Over the past two years, Uraidla Primary School has had a strong focus on developing Learner Agency and Effective Learners as part of the Department for Education’s Strategy for Public Education.

This has been an important area of learning for our staff and is something that now guides much of the work we do with students each day.

In our Site Learning Plan, we have linked our literacy and numeracy goals with helping students become effective learners. This means we are not only supporting children to build their reading, writing and maths skills, but also helping them develop the habits and dispositions they need to be successful learners for life.

These include:

Curiosity – encouraging students to ask questions and want to understand things more deeply.

Creativity – helping students to think in different ways, use their imagination and be open to new ideas.

Meaning making – supporting students to connect new learning with what they already know and have experienced.

Strategic awareness – helping students learn what to do when they are unsure or find something challenging.

Metacognition and self-regulation – supporting students to reflect on their learning, manage their behaviour and make positive choices that help them succeed.

Our goal is to help students become confident, capable and independent learners who can solve problems, keep trying when things are challenging, and apply these skills across all areas of learning and life.
