7OES Rock Climbing
Our Year 7 Outdoor Education students recently attended Bayside Rock for an exciting rock climbing excursion. Students challenged themselves on the high ropes and climbing walls, while also learning the important skills of belaying, teamwork and encouragement. It was great to see students stepping outside their comfort zones, supporting one another and giving each activity their best effort.
Year 9/10 Athletic Development - Biomechanics Excursion
On Friday, the 12th of June, as part of their studies in Years 9/10 Athletic Development, students participated in an excursion to the Centenary Park Driving Range. To support concepts about biomechanics and skills refinement learnt in the unit, students had an hour-long clinic with a PGA professional coach. This was highlighted by a challenge at the end to hit the 50m sign on the range to win a free Gatorade from the club house.
9/10 OES
This term, the students have been busy studying a wide variety of topics. They have examined the dangers within the outdoors and how to manage risks safely. They have also looked at the Australian environment and what this may have looked like prior to human contact, with only an Indigenous imprint and ultimately the changes that have occurred since European settlement. Students have also participated in some fantastic excursions, including surfing, bouldering, indoor caving and hiking to Lysterfield and Woolamai.
SIS AFL
During Term 2, we have had two teams represent our school in this year’s Intermediate girls' and Senior boys’ AFL competitions. Both teams have shown glimpses of the great footy they can play.
There have been some great moments, including our first win for the Senior boys, as this is the first year Bayside has competed at this level. All players did an amazing job, and they always kept trying despite the scoreboard. Well done to all players in both teams!
SIS Cross Country
During Week 6, a selected number of students went to Casey Fields to represent Bayside at this year's Cross Country carnival. There were some exceptional results with several students finishing in the Top 3, while we had a large number finishing inside the Top 10. We had three age groups finish 2nd, and as a school, we placed 4th overall! Well done to all involved.
SIS Swimming
Early in Term 2, selected students from Bayside travelled to MSAC to compete in this year’s SIS Swimming Carnival. It was the largest team we have ever brought to this event, and there were some fantastic individual results. As a school, we managed to win our second-ever Pennant at this event. Well done to all involved.
SIS Intermediate Girls’ Indoor Cricket Team
Our SIS Intermediate Girls’ Indoor Cricket Team have had a fantastic season, finishing top of the ladder in Division One!
The girls worked brilliantly as a unit and quickly worked out that indoor cricket is a lot more fun (and successful) when catches are taken for fun and running between wickets is done at lightning speed. A special mention to Elise Hallam, whose powerful batting had some staff suggesting she might secretly be the “Ellyse Perry of Bayside” (no official confirmation yet, but the rumours are growing).
Ee Yang Chia was outstanding behind the stumps with some exceptional wicket keeping, including three stumpings in a single over that would have made Alyssa Healy proud.
Ava Harris and Emily Buchanan added some serious flair to the batting lineup, mastering the pull shot in a way that had shades of Ricky Ponting at his peak.
And finally, the two Jasmines (Jasmine Slater and Jasmine Versteegan) made sure the indoor court was well covered, taking catches so smoothly you’d think they had a bit of magic carpet assistance from Agrabah. A brilliant effort from all involved, and a very well-deserved top-of-the-ladder finish!
Year 7 and 8 Volleyball team win the flag!
The boys were undefeated, winning 5 games against Woodleigh, Cornish, Balcome, Casey and St. Leonards. In the first game, the boys came back from 2 sets to zip against Woodleigh and never looked back.
The team: Jimmy, Eli, Jaxon, Barry, Jude, Thomas, Benny, Ollie Matthews, How and Evan.
The team huddle became a special but motivating time during each game. Well done boys...proud of you!
SSAV State Golf Championships
On the 25th of May, Bayside sent a team to compete at the School Sport Associations of Victoria (SSAV) State Golf Tournament. Bayside was invited to the event after winning the SIS competition last year. The team, comprising Zach Anderson (Year 11), Darcy Judd (Year 9) and Griffin Spierings (Year 9) had an early morning (leaving school at 5:15am) to compete at the prestigious Lonsdale Links (#19 ranked course in Australia). Despite the tough conditions, the boys played well, ranking 9th overall in the team event. In individual play, Darcy had the best round of the team, shooting an 84 and placing 37th overall.
It was a great day out and an opportunity for them to represent the school well in a high-performance setting. The organiser noted that the event “brought together an outstanding field of talented young golfers from across Victoria. The sportsmanship, professionalism, and exceptional standard of golf displayed throughout the event were a credit to all involved.” Great effort gents!
SIS Junior Year 7/8 Boys Soccer Team
What a win for the ages from our SIS Junior Year 7/8 Boys Soccer team, coming away with a thrilling 4–3 victory over Casey Grammar in a match that had just about everything. After racing to a 2–0 lead and later regaining control at 3–2, it turned into a true nail-biter right to the final whistle.
Led superbly by captain Logan, with Neo and Raph controlling the tempo like chess grandmasters, the team showed real composure in building play and managing key moments. Vaughn was electric up forward, scoring goals as if he had borrowed a few highlights from Nestory Irankunda, quick feet, sharp turns, and defenders left guessing all afternoon.
Will also found the back of the net, while Izaak delivered some outstanding defence blocks and some very creative assists, showing real vision and teamwork in crucial moments. It was a full team performance, with everyone contributing and celebrating together, whether it was a strong defensive block from ITV or TJ, or another attacking spark created by Ruize. And then there was Lucas Earl in goals, aka “Patrick Beach” for the day. At times, he looked less like a Year 7 student and more like Spider-Man between the posts. While the scoreboard shows three goals conceded, that doesn’t reflect the full story. He was peppered from all angles and still produced save after save, keeping Bayside in the contest and giving the team every chance to win it.
What stood out most was the way the boys supported each other. The energy and connection across the team was infectious, with celebrations for every tackle, block, pass, and goal. Even the opposition coach from Casey Grammar commented on how well the team worked together and specifically highlighted the outstanding performance of our goalkeeper.
A brilliant win, but more importantly, a brilliant team performance full of aggression, creativity, and genuine enjoyment of the game. Super proud of the effort, improvement, and teamwork shown across Term 2. Well done boys!
