We will launch Book Week this year with our Book Week Parade on Friday 21st August. Start planning those costumes!

The following week, we will continue the celebrations with a range of Book Week activities. This year's theme focuses on how different stories, voices, and characters can come together like instruments in an orchestra, creating one harmonious and memorable experience.

Australian Mathematics Competition – Years 3–6

On Thursday 6 August, learners in Years 3–6 will participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), Australia's largest school-based mathematics competition.

The AMC is an engaging 30-question competition that encourages learners to apply their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our learners will complete the online version of the competition, which is similar in format to NAPLAN.

Questions may cover a range of mathematical concepts, including:

  • Basic arithmetic
  • Fractions and ratios
  • Algebra and pre-algebra
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Statistics and probability
  • Problem-solving and mathematical reasoning

The Australian Mathematics Competition is an opt-in event. Families of participating learners have been notified via Compass and have completed the registration process.

Due to school closures and scheduling requirements, Thursday 6th August is the only day our learners can sit the competition. If a participating learner is absent on this day, they will unfortunately not be able to complete the competition at another time.

Past AMC papers have been provided to learners who wish to practise and become familiar with the style and format of the competition.

We wish all participating learners the very best and look forward to seeing them challenge themselves through this exciting mathematical opportunity.

Any questions please email Clare Pentreath – cpentreath@smechuca.catholic.edu.au

ICAS Assessments – Years 2–6

This term, selected learners in Years 2–6 will have the opportunity to participate in the ICAS English and Mathematics Assessments.

This is the third year St Mary’s Primary School has participated in ICAS, providing learners with the opportunity to extend their thinking, challenge themselves, and celebrate their academic achievements.

Teaching staff have analysed PAT assessment data to identify learners who will be invited to participate. Ten learners from each year level (Years 2–6) have been selected for both English and Mathematics based on their PAT scale score achievement at the end of term 2.

Families of selected learners will receive a letter in Week 2 with further information about participation.

Year 6

Our Year 6 Interschool Sport teams continue to represent St Mary's with pride, determination and excellent sportsmanship each week.

Our Football team remains undefeated and is currently sitting in second place despite missing the opening round due to our student-free day. Another impressive win last week against 208 Primary School saw Mr Larkin and the boys continue their outstanding season.

Our Netball teams are also enjoying a fantastic season. Despite having an early bye, all four teams remain firmly in the winner's circle. Our A Team is sitting in first place, B Team is currently second after another two strong wins, while our C and D Teams are sitting in second and third respectively. With only a few rounds remaining, the race to finals is shaping up to be an exciting one.

While our Soccer and Handball teams haven't enjoyed the same results on the scoreboard, they have shown terrific improvement each week. Many students are playing these sports for the first time, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence, skills and teamwork continue to grow. Their willingness to challenge themselves and give their best each week is something they should be very proud of.

If any parents or family members would like to come along and support our Year 6 students, Football and Handball are played at Echuca East Recreation Reserve this Friday, while Soccer and Netball are played at Echuca United from 1:30 pm each Friday. The final round’s Football and Handball will be played at Twin Rivers and all of the Grandfinals will be played at the Echuca South Complex.

Go St Mary's!

From learning lines to mastering choreography and stage positions, the students have shown incredible dedication, teamwork, and enthusiasm every step of the way. We are so proud of their effort and energy. We can’t wait for you to see them shine on stage!
