Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration

To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, students across all year levels learned about the legend of Chang’e Flying to the Moon and explored the rich traditions behind this special festival. Through stories, creative projects, and hands-on cultural activities, students deepened their understanding of Chinese language and culture in joyful and meaningful ways.

🌕 Prep & Year 1

Prep and Year 1 students explored the meaning of “中秋节” and the symbols of the festival, such as the moon and mooncakes. They practised writing the characters “中秋” , “月饼“ and used playdough to form the strokes, helping them remember character structure in a fun, hands-on way. It was lovely to see their joy as they discovered how Chinese writing connects with art and creativity.

🏮 Year 2

Year 2 students learned about Mid-Autumn traditions through stories, songs, and craft. They made beautiful rabbit lanterns and carefully wrote the greeting “中秋节快乐” (“Happy Mid-Autumn Festival”) on them. Their focus and excitement while decorating their lanterns filled the classroom with festive spirit.

🐇Year 3 & 4

Year 3 and 4 students extended their learning by exploring modern and creative ways to celebrate the festival. They designed imaginative mooncake flavours — from pizza mooncakes to magical ones that could bring good fortune or special powers! Students then described their creations in Mandarin, using new words and phrases with growing confidence.

🌸 Year 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 students worked collaboratively to retell and reinterpret the story of Chang’e Flying to the Moon. They created thoughtful and humorous versions of the tale through beautifully illustrated PowerPoint slides, showing great teamwork and creativity. Many students added their own cultural reflections and modern twists, making each presentation unique and meaningful.

It was a joy to see all students so engaged and expressive while learning Mandarin. Their enthusiasm truly lit up our classrooms like the full moon during this special celebration.
