Child Safety and Wellbeing

A Child Safe School

Ss Michael & John’s Primary School holds the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility. Central to the mission of our Catholic schools in Horsham –Ss Michael & John’s Primary School and St Brigid’s College – is an absolute commitment to fostering the dignity, self-esteem and integrity of children and young people and providing them with a safe, supportive and enriching environment to develop spiritually, physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.

Ss Michael & John’s Primary School ensures that people working with our children and young people are suitable and are supported to reflect our child safety and wellbeing values in practice.  When recruiting, our advertising, referee checks, and pre-employment screening for staff and for volunteers is robust and emphasises child safety and wellbeing.  Guided by our Recruitment Policy and Procedures, School Volunteer Policy and Procedures, Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy, and Safeguarding Children & Young People Code of Conduct we make certain:

  • staff and volunteers have current working with children checks or equivalent background checks
  • staff and volunteers receive an appropriate induction annually and are aware of their responsibilities to children and young people, including record keeping, information sharing and reporting obligations
  • ongoing supervision and people management is focused on child safety and wellbeing
  • staff and volunteers sign annually a Statement of Commitment, declaring they will abide by Ss Michael & John’s Safeguarding and Young People Code of Conduct

All our policies and procedures can be found on the school website or available on request from the Front Office.  Families are always welcome and encouraged to get in contact to discuss any concerns or provide feedback regarding our child safe practices and student wellbeing.  You are invited to contact Louise and Lisa, our Child Safety Officers, anytime via the Front Office or on (03) 5382 3000.
