5/6MR What A Great Term!

We have had such a great term in 5/6MR. A couple of highlights in the most recent weeks are Book Week and our excursion to Scienceworks. 

BOOK WEEK 

Last week we celebrated Book Week at SJV. We began the week with a visit from author Marc McBride. His visit was very engaging, with our students participating in drawing activities and watching him create artwork live. 

Over the week we then listened to some of the shortlisted books. Our favourites were Dear Brocoli, Dawn, Bob & Dob & The Farm By The Sea. 

On Wednesday, we then enjoyed the annual Book Week Parade. It was great to see so many students really getting into the spirit of Book Week and dressing up for a wonderful day.

SCIENCEWORKS EXCURSION

This term our Literacy Rich Knowledge Unit has been based around the Science of Electricity so this week we went on an excursion to Scienceworks to learn more about Electricity and also to investigate all of the other wonderful exhibitions that are there. Our first stop was the Beyond Perception Exhibition. Students had an exciting opportunity to explore Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen which is an immersive exhibition that encouraged students to discover the invisible forces and phenomena that shape our world. Through interactive and hands-on experiences, students investigated fascinating concepts including gravitational waves, invisible light, sound, aerodynamics and motion. We then headed to the Energy: Electricity and Circuits show in the Lightning Theatre at Scienceworks. Through spectacular demonstrations and hands-on experiences, students explored the fascinating world of electricity, learning about static and current electricity, conductors, insulators and how electrical circuits work. Highlights included a hair-raising encounter with a Van de Graaff generator, creating light using a pickled onion and an exciting energy race using hand-crank generators. The visit finished with an impressive demonstration of live lightning strikes, while students also learned important safety strategies for staying safe during lightning storms. After lunch, we enjoyed exploring the Think Ahead exhibition at Scienceworks, where students were challenged to imagine how advances in science and technology could shape the way we live in the future. Through interactive displays and hands-on activities, students explored ideas around future cities, transport, food, medicine, space and new technologies. They had the opportunity to design their own future vehicles and cities, consider how technology might improve our lives, and think creatively about the challenges facing future generations. Finally, we ended the day at the wonderful Sportsworks Exhibition where they discovered the science behind sport, movement and physical performance. Through a range of interactive challenges, students tested their reaction time, balance, strength and coordination while investigating how our muscles, bones and bodies work during physical activity. They enjoyed competing against sporting legends such as Cathy Freeman, testing their skills in wheelchair racing and rock climbing, and exploring the technology and equipment used to enhance sporting performance. 

A great day was had by all!!!
