R U OK? Day – Ask R U OK? Any Day
At St Gabriel’s Primary School, we recognise the importance of creating a caring and connected community where everyone feels valued, supported and heard.
R U OK? Day is a reminder that a simple question “Are you OK?” can make a meaningful difference. This year’s message, “Ask R U OK? Any Day”, encourages us to continue checking in with the people around us, not just on one day, but throughout the year.
Children experience a range of emotions and challenges as they grow, and knowing they have trusted people who will listen and support them is important. Taking time to connect, ask questions and genuinely listen helps build strong relationships and a sense of belonging.
How can families support R U OK? conversations at home?
Start the conversationAsk your child questions such as:
- “How was your day today?”
- “What was something that made you happy?”
- “Was there anything that felt tricky today?”
Listen and be presentSometimes children may not be ready to talk straight away. Let them know that you are available when they are ready and that their feelings matter.
Create regular opportunities to connectSmall moments such as talking during a car trip, preparing dinner together or going for a walk can provide opportunities for meaningful conversations.
Encourage help-seekingRemind children that asking for help is a strength. If something is worrying them, they can speak with a trusted adult at home, at school or in their community.
Together, we can continue to build a community where we notice when someone may need support, take the time to ask, and show kindness through listening and connection.
Remember: A conversation can make a difference. Ask R U OK? Any Day.
