UNDERSTANDING THE OCCUPATION SHORTAGE LIST (OSL)

The Occupation Shortage List (OSL) shows which jobs in Australia are currently experiencing worker shortages. It provides a snapshot of where demand for skilled workers is highest, either across the country, in metropolitan areas, or in regional areas.

For students, this data is useful when planning future career pathways. It highlights:

  • Which jobs are in demand now and may continue to be in the future
  • Where shortages are occurring (city vs regional areas)
  • Why shortages exist

When considering career options, students should think about:

  • Aligning their interests and strengths with areas of high demand.
  • Whether they’d be open to living or working in regional areas, where opportunities may be greater.
  • Training or qualifications that could position them well in industries facing skill shortages.
