The Living Room Project: Designing a More Sustainable Future
How can we create a future where everyone has fair access to sustainable housing? This is the big question being explored by some of our Year 9 and 10 students as they take part in The Living Room Project, a free global design challenge delivered by the University of Melbourne and Science Gallery Melbourne.
Across three sessions, students will use speculative design thinking to imagine and develop ideas for a preferred future where housing is more sustainable and accessible for everyone. They will collaborate with peers from across Australia and China, sharing perspectives, exploring possibilities and rethinking what the homes and communities of tomorrow could look like.
The first session saw 24 students, accompanied by Mr Stewart and Mrs Scott, travel to Science Gallery Melbourne for a tour of the upcoming exhibition, EMERGENCE(Y). Students also had the opportunity to connect with their international peers from Lalor North and China through a hybrid learning experience.

The remaining two sessions will take place online at school, allowing students to continue collaborating, exchanging ideas and developing their innovative designs.
This exciting opportunity encourages our students to think beyond the present, tackle real-world challenges and recognise how creativity, collaboration and fresh perspectives can help shape a fairer, more sustainable future for all.
Who knows? Some of their ideas could be the inspiration for the homes of tomorrow!
