The second round of the DAV Debating season took place on Wednesday evening,
14 May, at Haileybury City Campus in West Melbourne.
The Year 12 A-Grade Team represented by Alisa Sanelli, Olivia Leahy and Alice Portz were narrowly defeated by St Kevin’s College but debated valiantly for the affirmative side on whether CEO and executives should be held criminally responsible for data breaches.
The Year 11 B-Grade Team represented by Kate Chesterton, Chiara Patruno and Lucy Ryan won their debate convincingly against Melbourne Grammar on the topic of childcare centres being solely government funded, debating on the negative side, with Lucy claiming best speaker.
Both the Year 10 C-Grade and Year 9 D-Grade teams again recorded strong wins.
Well done to Alice Moffat (best speaker), Sophie Teo, Michaela Xenoyiannakis at Year 10, winning their debate against Haileybury, for the negative side, on the topic that all young people aged 16 - 22 years old should receive a Universal Basic Income from the government.
The Year 9’s, represented by Charlotte Jones, Hannah Carton and Mabel Maclatchy, also showed great composure in their second debate, also defeating Haileybury. They successfully argued as the negative team, opposing the idea that phone use should be used as a learning tool in schools. Well done to Hannah Carton in claiming the best speaker award for that debate!
The teams now enter the secret topic rounds in which quick thinking and the art of debating will be really put to the test – we all look forward to seeing how they go!
