Team Spirit is Our Competitive Edge

CGSAV Intermediate & Senior Basketball

Our first sport out of the blocks for Term 2 was basketball, with our Intermediate and Senior teams going to MSAC on 30 April for their competition day.  Thank you to Ms Lin and Ms McCarthy who coached the teams on the day.

Ms Lin reports; “It was a great day overall.  Both teams showed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship.  The girls supported each other throughout the event, working hard and giving their best effort in every game.  It was wonderful to see the Intermediate team make it all the way to the semi-finals — a fantastic achievement!  Their determination and teamwork were really impressive.   The Senior team also played with great energy, demonstrating resilience and a strong will to compete.  It was inspiring to watch both teams push themselves and support one another, regardless of the challenges they faced during the day.  The level of commitment from all the girls was outstanding and they truly represented the school with pride.”

Well done to all of the girls who took part!

House Athletics Carnival

What better way to start Term 2 than with our House Athletics Carnival?  On Wednesday 7 May, the Academy Community travelled to the Collingwood Athletics track for a jam-packed schedule of events.

The Year 12 girls set the tone for the day with a high-energy novelty race to start us off. With an array of fancy dress the girls took to the track with a relay race consisting of a three-legged leg, a wheelbarrow leg, some leap frog and a crab walk.  It was great to see the other year levels along the sidelines cheering them on and getting excited for the day ahead.

The girls then set about the track and field events - running, jumping and throwing as far and as fast as they could.   We saw extremely high levels of participation across all events, with record numbers of students taking on the 1500m race!   The House Captains and House Advisors worked hard all day, filling up events and keeping the points tally rising.

A few showers over lunchtime didn’t dampen spirits and the girls remained positive and enthusiastic throughout the afternoon, finishing the day with rounds of House chants and presentation of the awards.

The final totals were as follows:

  • First place - Sherlock 1177 points
  • Second place - McAuley 900 points
  • Third place- Frayne 827 points
  • Fourth place - Goold 619 points

Unfortunately, due to some technical difficulties, we had some errors in the final individual results.  After some work from the PE and IT teams, we are pleased to announce the final individual results:

Junior

  • 1st - Willa Cusick
  • 2nd - Willow Ham
  • 3rd - Eva Rozek

Intermediate

  • 1st - Greta Zabotto & Leanny Karni
  • 2nd - Imogen Baber
  • 3rd - Ivy Banks

Senior

  • 1st - Adelle Absalom
  • 2nd - Maya Pinto & Sienna Komarnycki
  • 3rd - Jenna George

And congratulations to our joint individual champions:

  • Charlotte Place and Lena Daoud-Kolusniewski

Another great House Carnival - well done to all students and congratulations to our winners!

CGSAV Hockey

No rest for the wicked for our Hockey teams, who went out the day after Athletics Carnival to play in the CGSAV competition at the State Hockey Centre.

A tough division for our Senior team, who, despite playing their hearts out, did not progress to the final.   Some great team work and Academy spirit was shown throughout the day and the students still enjoyed every minute of representing their school.

A very successful day for our Junior team, however, with 3 wins and a draw taking the girls to the grand final.  They faced St. Colomba’s in the grand final and took home a 2-1 win and the trophy for the day!

Congratulations to all, but especially to Zoe Mazzotta, who only started at Academy this year, who won ‘Best Grand Final Player’.   Well done to all of our students for another great day of sport!

A big thank you to Essendon Hockey Club for providing us with all of the equipment for the day and to Ms Fogarty and Ms Orfini for their support and coaching.

Well done to all of our students for another great day of sport!

CGSAV Junior Basketball

On Tuesday, 13 May, the Junior basketball squads took on the CGSAV Basketball tournament at MSAC.  Coached by the Year 10 leaders Clio Dinnen, Tara Coghlan and Darcie Mitchell, the girls had a full on day of nine back-to-back matches against some strong sides.

Team B, coached by Clio and Tara, hit the ground running with a win straight off the bat.  A couple of tougher games saw a loss and a draw but the girls remained positive, listened to the coaches and worked hard together. Despite not progressing to the grand final, the girls improved exponentially throughout the day. Congratulations to Alexa Riley who won coaches MVP.

Team A, coached by Darcie, had a tough division of schools with some strong basketballers, but came out of the blocks hot and ready. The girls played out of their skins in every game, working cohesively and supporting one another up and down the court. They remained undefeated throughout, meaning they were straight into the Grand Final. The girls went head to head for a second time against MSJ and after a frantic start, found their groove and pulled away, winning 40-13. Congratulations to Zali Allen, who won best grand final player as awarded by the officials. Darcie selected Estella Mu as coaches MVP.

Congratulations to all of the girls involved on an outstanding day!
