Year 3 Excursion to CERES – Towards Zero Waste
On 17 August, the Year 3 students enjoyed a wonderful excursion to CERES as part of the Towards Zero Waste program. It was a unique, hands-on learning experience that provided
students with a memorable and engaging day while helping them understand the importance of caring for our environment.
Students explored what waste is, where it comes from and the impact it can have on our environment. They discovered the exciting ways CERES works with the community to turn waste into something valuable and learnt how people can work together to keep our environment clean. Students also had the opportunity to put their learning into action by walking around the CERES grounds with tongs and collecting rubbish they found along the way.
A highlight of the day was learning about composting and discovering the important role worms and other creatures play in keeping our soil healthy. Students participated in Garden Bingo, searching for different bugs that contribute to a healthy ecosystem. After lunch, students enjoyed playing on a 100% recyclable playground, providing another opportunity to see how reused materials can be given a new purpose. Students also made their very own paper using shredded pieces of used paper. This was a wonderful hands-on experience that demonstrated the process of reusing and remaking materials rather than simply throwing them away.
Overall, the excursion was an engaging and meaningful experience that connected learning to real-world sustainability. Students had the opportunity to explore, ask questions, work together and actively contribute to caring for the environment. It was a fantastic day of learning, discovery and getting our hands dirty while learning that waste may be smelly and messy, but it is oh so important!
District Athletics Event
On Tuesday 12th August, 55 students from Years 3–6 represented SMCM at the District Athletics Carnival held at Meadowglen.
Each one of our athletes represented our school with determination and gave their very best effort throughout the day. They demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, celebrated their achievements and those of others and finished the day second overall. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and the way they represented our school.
Congratulations to the following students who progressed through to the Division Athletics Carnival, which will be held on Tuesday 8th September. We wish them all the best for this event!
