Science in Prep/1 

Our Prep/Year 1 scientists have been busy exploring reversible and irreversible changes through lots of exciting, hands-on experiments!

We began with the Great Ice Challenge, where students worked to melt ice and rescue frozen animals. We discovered that melting ice is a reversible change because the water can be frozen and turned back into ice again.

We then investigated some much tastier changes! Students observed popcorn kernels as they heated, popped and transformed into fluffy popcorn. We also made toast with butter, discussing the changes that happen when bread is toasted and butter melts. We discovered that while melted butter can become solid again, toasted bread cannot be changed back into fresh bread!

These experiences have helped our young scientists understand that some changes can be reversed, while others are permanent. There has been plenty of predicting, observing, discussing and, of course, a little tasting along the way!
