Yr 5/6 Camp!

On Wednesday, the 4th of August, the year 5/6’s from Holy Cross went to school camp at Adanac CYC Camps at Yarra Junction. I loved the camp, especially the food and activities.

My personal favourite activity was hut building, especially the challenge of working against time and resources. After 30 stressful minutes, all team members had to gather in their huts and have a small bucket of water thrown on it! My group didn’t really get that wet; the throw was a bit off target, but our hut was built strongly up against a tree with lots of sticks, leaves and bark over the top of our frame.

Another great activity was the flying fox, which felt like you were a possum gliding from one tree to another. At 130 metres, you could wave, call, and even scream while going across the crystal blue lake. You got an amazing view of the sun glistening on the water, and felt a rush of cool air when flying on this monster activity.

This camp was very memorable to me because the food was exceptional. Most other camps have pasta, but this camp had AFC (Adanac Fried Chicken), which, in my opinion, was probably as good as KFC! Overall, this camp was truly amazing.

We had our bags, and we jumped on the bus on the way to camp. We were all so excited as we waved goodbye to our school and all the parents outside the bus. We were officially on the way to Adanac. The bus ride was full of card games and laughter until we stopped to eat lunch at Lilydale Lake. When we finished the long drive, we arrived at camp. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily, but we started our activities.

First we were greeted by the Adanac staff with karaoke and a safety briefing. We were allocated our camp and activity groups for the three days and headed off to start the fun. Our first activity was hut building, there were thick logs scattered around the forest and we split up in our groups to make the hut. At the end we tested to see if our huts were strong and waterproof by tipping a bucket of water on top, most of us got wet! We had afternoon tea on the deck and set off to do our last activity for the day, Treadwall and 9 square. Treadwall was a rock climbing wall that moved like a treadmill when you applied weight. Next we headed to our cabin to rest and get ready for dinner. For dinner we had chicken tenders with ice cream for dessert.

Day two started with cereal and toast for breakfast. Then canoeing, everyone paired up, grabbed an oar and a life jacket and set sail onto the lake. The water was freezing cold and the paddles splashed water into our canoes, we played a few games on the lake then headed inside to get redressed. One of my favourite activities was the flying fox. We got secured onto the zip line and went flying over the hill and lake. We ended the day with pasta for dinner and chocolate mousse for dessert. After hanging in our cabins for a while we set out into the dark for a long night walk with toasted marshmallows around the campfire as a reward.

On the last day we spent the time playing games as a group. By lunchtime we were all tired and exhausted, we jumped on the bus again for the long trip but this time it didn't feel as long. In the end we had heaps of fun with our activities and being together at Adanac.
