New Zealand Exchange Program Reflection

From 18 April to 2 May, we had the incredible opportunity to travel to Auckland, New Zealand, as part of our Year 10 Exchange Program. We lived with host families and attended St Kentigern College, experiencing a completely different school environment and daily routine. Some of us lived close to the school while others travelled up to two hours each day, which gave us all a unique perspective on life in New Zealand.

We were also fortunate to take part in ANZAC Day commemorations with our host families, which was a meaningful cultural experience. From 2 to 16 May, our exchange partners joined us in Australia and attended Clayfield College, allowing us to continue building friendships and sharing our experiences.

Overall, the exchange was an unforgettable experience that helped us develop independence, build lasting friendships and gain a deeper appreciation for different cultures.

“Attending St Kent’s was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The school was much larger than Clayfield and it was exciting trying new classes, especially Dance with my new friends. We explored the city, visited the zoo and spent so much time together that it felt like we were really living there. By the end of the trip, it felt so normal being there, which made it very hard to leave.”

“Staying as a day student gave me a completely new school experience and I really enjoyed the independence of my own routine. One of my most memorable moments was running cross country barefoot, which was something I had never experienced before. It showed me how different everyday life can be. The exchange created so many fun memories and friendships that I will always value.”

“My exchange experience was unforgettable and went by so quickly. Staying on a farm in Clevedon gave me a completely different lifestyle from boarding school. Some of my favourite moments were driving home from school listening to music and exploring places like Waiheke Island. It was such a unique and exciting experience that I will always be grateful for.”

“The exchange allowed me to experience a different culture through food, activities and travel. One highlight was visiting Matarangi, staying at a beach house and attending an ANZAC Day parade. Exploring Auckland, including the Sky Tower and waterfront at night, made the experience even more special. It was an unforgettable opportunity to build friendships and learn more about the world.”

“During our time in New Zealand, we explored Auckland and travelled to Rotorua and Taupo. Visiting the luge was a highlight and learning about Māori culture made the trip even more meaningful. We even learned phrases like ‘Kia Ora’ and ‘Ka Kite’. We feel very grateful for the opportunity and would encourage others to take part in the future.”
