2026 Barwon Junior Debating Competition – Round 3

On Wednesday 12th August, our two Year 6 debating teams travelled to Mirripoa Primary School in Mount Duneed for the third round of the Barwon Junior Debating Competition. The topic was That Students Should Be Paid For Good Results At School.

This was the first of two impromptu rounds, meaning we didn’t know the topic until we got into the preparation room. We had just half an hour to think of all our arguments, examples, team line and rebuttals before arguing our case to the adjudicator and audience.

Chilwell A was arguing for the negative. George was 1st speaker, Harry was 2nd speaker, Millie was 3rd speaker and Shayaan was supporting with rebuttals. Chilwell B was arguing for the affirmative. Liam was 1st speaker, Lexi was 2nd speaker and Felix was 3rd speaker. Team B was down one debater for this round, so they were all responsible for rebuttals.

They were both excellent debates, with convincing arguments and rebuttals from each side. In the end, Chilwell won both debates, with George and Lexi winning Best Speaker awards. The adjudicator commented on our wonderful teamwork, structure and manner. Well done to all our debaters, who have put in many hours of preparation and practice.

We are now focussed on Round 4, which is less than 2 weeks away, when we will host debaters from Bellbrae Primary and Armstrong Creek Primary. We have been hard at work, preparing with weekly lunchtime impromptu debates, and will keep you updated on the results.
