Event Spotlight

A night in the library with author Tony Birch

You're invited to join author (and a great friend of our school community) Tony Birch and fellow writer Bec Kavanagh in a special Book Week evening event at our school on August 28.

Tony has been working closely with our students in a series of creative writing workshops throughout 2023 and 2024. Tony and Bec will share and celebrate some of the wonderful stories from our students in this exclusive evening event.

Tony and Bec will also talk about his most recent novel, Women & Children, which won the prestigious The Age ‘Book of the Year’ award in 2024. Tony is the author of three other novels: The White Girl, winner of the 2020 NSW Premier’s Award for Indigenous Writing, and shortlisted for the 2020 Miles Franklin Literary Award; Ghost River, winner of the 2026 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Indigenous Writing; and Blood, which was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2024.

He has also published four short story collections, the most recent of which, Dark as Last Night, won both the 2022 NSW Premier’s Literary Award and the Queensland Literary Award for Fiction. Preston High School is honoured to have Tony as part of our school community.

The Power of Writing and Creativity evening will be held in our school's new Tony Birch Library on Wednesday, August 28, from 6pm-7pm. This is a free event but numbers are limited so bookings are essential. You can book your tickets via the link below or by scanning the QR code in the flyer.
