From the Head of Boarding

MEBS - A Legacy of Excellence

 Dear Boarding Community,

Holy Week is a time of reflection and remembrance and is the most important week in Catholicism. It is a time to pray for forgiveness, guidance, and for a renewed sense of faith, focusing on the events of Jesus's Passion and Resurrection.

MEBS Parent Advisory Committee

Mount Erin Boarding has a Parent Advisory Board that consists of parents, Principals, a representative of CEDWW, and the Head of Boarding. The Chair of the Parent Advisory Committee for 2025 is Mrs Heidi Gooden, and the nominated Secretary is Mr Stephen Hines.

The Parent Advisory Board meets once per term.

Dress Standards

The MEBS Boarding Guide, which is available on the MEBS website under Parent Resources, has a section called Dress Standards. Dress code is usually outlined by all Boarding schools to assist young people in knowing what to wear for different situations. MEBS has outlined dress code for school (see their College expectations), Mass, Dinner/ Breakfast, Street Leave, Swimming, Sport/ PE, and in the Boarding House. An advantage of Boarding is the development of independent living skills, of being prepared. After returning from TAFE, swimming, sports training, or gym, a shower and a change of clothing are expected. Correct footwear is part of the dress standard.

One Term Completed

Our new Boarders have completed one term at their new College and as a MEBS Boarder. They seem to have grown in confidence and stature, immersing themselves in their new school, their classes, and their new home away from home. I encourage parents to contact either me (0448 860 640)  or our Boarding Coordinator ( 0447 014 385) at any time if there are any concerns following term 1 and leading into Term 2.

A Big Term

Since our last edition of Boarders' Buzz #1 in March, so much has taken place.

Six of our Boarders played in the recent Hardy Shield close win against Mount Austin High 17 -16. Congratulations to Ollie, Jeremy, Kai, Jack, Archie, and Dustin for their part in the team's success, leading up to the game and on the day. Dustin missed the match due to a shoulder injury over the weekend before the match, but was present to see the Team's win.

Ollie was the Captain of the side who also kicked the winning goal, Kai received the Rick Keast Medal for Player of the Match, and Jeremy scored two tries.

Congratulations to the Team, Coaches, and all involved.

Staffing Update

We are sad to see our Transport Officer, Mr. James Mortensen, leave us at the end of the Term due to retirement.  James has been with MEBS for thirteen years, providing sterling service, transporting our Boarders all over Wagga for medical/ dental appointments, sporting, school, and personal activities. We will miss him but wish him all the best for the future, taking time to play golf and support his footy team.  Go Melbourne!

The Boarders and Staff farewelled James on Thursday night, complete with a "Arch of Honour " as he left for the last time.

Apologies to all for not holding our Coffee Chat as planned on March 12.

Please join the Head of Boarding and the Boarding Coordinator for a relaxed chat about Boarding Matters on Wednesday 7 May at 7.00 pm via Google Meet*.

A link will be sent to all parents on Monday 5.

* Google Meet has replaced Zoom as the CEDWW preferred communication app.

The MEBS Summer Catering  Menu is available on our webpage under Parent Resources along with our Boarding Guide.  There is a food committee which consists of our Catering Manager, Boarding students from the student leadership group, the Boarding Coordinator, and the Head of Boarding. We would love to have some parents from both Colleges to be involved. If you are interested in joining this committee, please let me know by messaging/ calling 0448 860 640.

Boarders' Mass

Bishop - elect Reverend Dr. Peter Murphy
Bishop - elect Reverend Dr. Peter Murphy

MEBS celebrated Mass in the Mount Erin Chapel on Wednesday, 26 March.

We welcomed Bishop-elect Murphy, who celebrated Mass, and we were joined by Principals Mrs Val Thomas, Mr. Chris Brown, Vice Principal Shaun Ellis, Leader of Students Mel Cramp, and other guests/ parents. I was particularly proud of our Year 12 Boarders for their participation and preparation for Mass. Special thanks to Samuel Thomsen for the music/ sound on the night.

Boarding Student Leaders

The Student Leaders meet every two weeks to discuss and work on a number of projects and Boarding issues. This year has seen proposals for the Boys' Laundry, Year 11 Driving, the Mixed Netball Competition, Boarders' Mass and a future Mixed Touch Football match between MEBS and sister/ brother College, St Francis. The Leaders met recently at an off - campus/ end of term dinner meeting at Grill'd in Wagga.

A happy and safe School Holiday period to all of our Boarding and College Community.
