Science week
Next week is National Science Week. The school theme for National Science Week in 2026 is ‘Seeds of Science: nurturing science for all.’ This theme invites students across Australia to explore the power of curiosity, inquiry and shared learning in growing scientific understanding. Just as seeds need the right conditions to grow, knowledge flourishes when it is nurtured, shared and applied to real-world and authentic challenges across all the scientific disciplines.
The theme encourages schools to explore how ideas take root, develop and spread – from the first spark of a question to the sharing of discoveries that benefit the wider community. It’s a celebration of how knowledge grows when tended with care, creativity and collaboration.
Science Incursion - Liquid Nitrogen Show
To celebrate Science Week, on Monday, 17th August all students will be participating in the Liquid Nitrogen incursion for Science Week. Mad About Science will present the show and students will learn all about the states of matter and what happens when we heat things up and cool things down with chemical nitrogen. There will be lots of ice breaking volunteer moments, chilling demonstrations and even a frosty explosion, everyone will learn all about reversible and irreversible reactions.
The incursion will enable students to learn about different things:
Learn about all the different states of matter – solid, liquid and gas – in a fun and engaging way!
We’ll freeze, smash and shatter everyday materials in front of your eyes.
Witness a bone-chilling explosion as liquid nitrogen gas rapidly expands.
Volunteers will be asked to blow up balloons in the most unusual way.
Experience colourful, exothermic reactions that will make you go WOW!
