Learning Pedagogy and Innovation

Mrs Laura Higgins- Director of Learning Pedagogy and Innovation

As we reach the halfway point of the term, it has been fantastic to see students actively engaging in a wide range of enriching learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

Our students have participated in several valuable excursions and incursions designed to deepen their understanding and connect classroom learning to real-world contexts. Highlights include VCE Physical Education students undertaking VO₂ max analysis to explore fitness and performance, VCE Art students visiting the Top Arts exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, and a meaningful Living Culture incursion as part of Reconciliation Week. In addition, Year 10 students have recently completed the NAPLAN Science Literacy testing, providing useful insights into their scientific thinking and skills.

Students in Years 7, 9 and 11 have also benefited from targeted study skills workshops delivered by Elevate Education. These sessions provided practical strategies to support effective study habits, revision techniques, time management, and exam preparation. Students were encouraged to apply these strategies during their study periods and in the lead-up to upcoming assessments.

A number of staff members were also fortunate to participate in a full-day professional learning workshop with The Writer's Toolbox. This program is designed to strengthen writing and thinking skills across all subject areas and year levels. In the coming weeks, selected Year 7 and 8 classes will begin trialling elements of the program, with the goal of expanding its impact across the school.

In classrooms, teachers have been working hard to consistently embed and utilise clear learning intentions and success criteria. This approach helps students better understand what they are learning, why it matters, and how they can be successful. A key part of this work is goal setting, which has become a High Impact Teaching Strategy (HITS) across the school. Through goal setting, students are encouraged to reflect on their progress, identify areas for improvement, and take greater ownership of their learning.
