Around the College

We love to celebrate our students' achievements - if your student has won something, appeared in something, competed in something, or is proud of achieving something outside of school, send photos and information to their Homeroom teacher for inclusion in our Newsletter.
Year 12 Chemistry Students Strike Gold in Redox Practical!
Our Year 12 Chemistry students recently swapped theory for flames, reactions and a little bit of chemistry magic during an exciting practical investigation into redox reactions and electrochemistry.
Working in teams, students heated copper coins and observed dramatic chemical changes as oxidation and reduction reactions took place before their eyes. The lab was buzzing with curiosity, problem-solving and excitement as students connected the visible changes to electron transfer, metal reactivity and the electrochemical concepts they have been exploring in class.
From glowing Bunsen burners to colour-changing coins, the practical brought Chemistry to life and gave students the chance to apply their learning in a hands-on and memorable way.
Best of all, students were able to keep their transformed “lucky pennies” from the experiment — with many now planning to take them into their upcoming exams for a little extra luck and confidence!
Our Year 12 VCE Economics students were privileged to attend an online, interactive presentation with Sarah Hunter, the RBA Assistant Governor.
The discussion offered students a unique chance to gain insights into Australia's monetary policy and current economic trends, and to connect with one of Australia's best-known economic leaders.
Our thanks to the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Victorian Commercial Teachers Association and Haileybury for organising such an invaluable experience for our students.
Reconciliation Week at Mary MacKillop
During National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), our school hosted cultural practitioners from Living Culture. Students in Years 7–10 took part in presentations and workshops that offered rare and meaningful opportunities to deepen their understanding of our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to reflect on how we can all contribute to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.
Throughout the week, students and staff across our school also engaged in prayer, learning, and class activities that honour and celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Thank you to all who helped make this happen, and to all the students for engaging respectfully and enthusiastically in the workshops and presentations.
