Welcome Back!

Welcome back to Term 4! We hope you had a restful break and are ready to jump into an exciting and productive final term. Over the coming weeks, our classrooms will be driven by explicit teaching to ensure every student receives clear guidance, structured support and the tools they need to succeed. Packed with rich learning opportunities and meaningful milestones, this term promises to be a powerful finish to the year, let’s bring our energy, curiosity and determination to make every day count!

Term 4 Focus Areas

Term 4 is a busy and dynamic time, balancing rich academic learning with our spiritual preparation for the upcoming season of Advent. Here is a snapshot of English and Maths focus areas for Term 4 and practical ways you can support your child’s learning at home.

1. English: Consolidating Fluency, Comprehension, and Vocabulary

Throughout Term 4, teachers are consolidating explicit instruction in reading fluency, comprehension strategies and written expression as outlined in the NSW English K–6 Syllabus.

  • How to support at home:
    • Daily Reading Routine: Maintain 15–20 minutes of shared or independent reading each evening. Ask open-ended questions about character motivation, theme and author’s purpose.
    • Rich Vocabulary: Introduce descriptive or technical words during everyday conversations and encourage your child to use them when recounting events.

2. Mathematics: Real-World Application & Problem Solving

In Mathematics, students are consolidating mental computation, working with measurement, data and spatial reasoning and applying problem-solving skills in new contexts.

  • How to support at home:
    • Everyday Math: Involve your child in practical estimation and measurement—such as measuring ingredients during cooking, reading timetables, telling time on analog clocks or calculating budgets while shopping.
    • Strategic Games: Play board and card games (e.g., Yahtzee, Connect 4, Chess) that reinforce spatial awareness, logic and numerical fluency.

Supporting Wellbeing in Term 4

Term 4 is fast-paced and full of exciting events, which can sometimes lead to tiredness or sensory overload for young children. To support their wellbeing:

  • Prioritise Sleep: Keep regular bedtime routines consistent, even as daylight hours stretch longer.
  • Keep Space for Unstructured Play: Balance extracurricular activities with quiet downtime at home to decompress.
  • Name Their Feelings: Check in regularly about how they are feeling regarding end-of-year changes and grade transitions.
