Numeracy Focus: Mastering Time & Multilingual Thinking

Our students have been building real-world skills through Numeracy. They have advanced from foundational number concepts to the practical task of telling time—learning to confidently read both digital and analogue clocks. These essential skills support daily living and foster greater independence.

A key part of this module supports our English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners. Students have been exploring how we use time-related language—words like often, rarely, usually, and never—and translating these terms into their first languages. This strategy strengthens understanding, enhances vocabulary across languages, and builds critical thinking skills. At OakTree College, we embrace linguistic diversity as a strength and foundation for lifelong learning.

Literacy Update: Exploring the Power of Texts

From traditional written stories to visual media, the students have been immersed in a wide range of texts. By identifying key ideas, examining structure and purpose, and practicing summarisation, they’re developing powerful analytical tools.

EAL students have focused on decodable texts, carefully matched to their language proficiency. These resources help learners expand their vocabulary, improve fluency, and gain confidence navigating English texts independently. Our inclusive approach ensures every student can engage meaningfully with language—preparing them for success both in and beyond the classroom.

Work-Related Skills: Preparing for the Workplace

Our students are getting ready for real-world work experience, with a strong focus on safety, professionalism, and communication.

They’ve completed the Safe@Work Occupational Health and Safety module, learning to recognise OHS symbols, understand their legal rights, and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly across different industries.

To support learning and reflection, students have begun writing in their work journals, which they’ll use during placements to track goals, log experiences, and receive feedback. With knowledge, preparation, and purpose, our students are ready to step confidently into the workplace.

Personal Development: Building Skills for Life

In Personal Development, our students have been engaging in deep self-reflection and goal setting. By analysing real-world case studies, they’re learning to identify their own employable skills, technical competencies, and personal attributes.

These sessions empower students to set realistic, achievable goals—career-related and personal—and recognise the value they bring to future roles. From time management to resilience and teamwork, students are discovering that these aren’t just "soft skills"—they’re essential life skills.
