Rhys Goodman – Awarded Taekwondo 2nd Degree Black Belt

In 2010, I was invited to start United Taekwondo at St Gregory’s College and all the staff and students have made me feel a part of this incredible community. Over the years we have duly assessed and promoted over 10 students to the level of 1st Degree Black Belt.  I started my association with Marist schools in 1973 and have always had a deep passion for giving back to the community in a meaningful way.

Rhys Goodman started his journey with United Taekwondo in 2016 and after dedicating over five years to learning taekwondo has achieved the level of 2nd Degree Black Belt. This is a huge achievement as Rhys has attained a level way above any other student in my program.

His dedication and commitment to the betterment of his fellow classmates has been outstanding. He has supported me, while I shared my message of inspiration around Australia, by taking the role of Branch Instructor at United Taekwondo St Gregory’s College.

This is a position of authority is only appointed to my finest leaders who represent our core values of respect, integrity, honour, honesty and humility.

Rhys’ greatest quality is that he is a humble person with incredible talents and I am honoured and blessed to have him as a part of United Taekwondo. I know he will leave the taekwondo program soon and I would like to wish him all the best with his future endeavours. The College community should be proud of Rhys as he is a testament to the Marist qualities that all students should aspire to as they become the best version of themselves.

NSW All Schools Mountain Bike Championships

A very chilly morning (1-degree Celcius) greeted the first-ever St Gregory’s Mountain Bike Teams at Yellomundee Regional Park on Sunday 6 June 2021. This event is a 4-hour team relay of 3 to 4 riders. The team completing the highest number of laps is crowned the winner.

St Greg’s entered two teams; a Junior team (Years 7 & 8), and an Intermediate team (Years 9 &10). Due to unforeseen circumstances, two members of the Intermediate team could not make the event, however, a very courageous Alex Gorey of Year 7, stepped up in true Greg’s style and rode up an age group so the Intermediate team could compete.

None of the boys had trained together, nor had any of them raced previously. Benjamin Humphrey confidently volunteered to start for the Intermediate team. The Junior team was not feeling so confident and after quite a bit of “I’m not going first”, a brave Justin Crisp headed off to the start line.

Both teams rode very well. Their transitions to the next rider were clean and safe and they fully supported each other as true team-mates throughout the entire event. The Intermediate team finished in 13th place and the Junior team in 19th.

While it is a team event, individual highlights include;

  • Benjamin Humphrey’s (Year 9) fastest lap ranked him 59/158 of all male competitors across years 7-12.
  • Alex Gorey (Year 7) fastest lap ranked him 79/158.

All boys really emptied the tank and should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Next event;  Oxley college has invited us to a similar event on Sunday 14 November. For more information www.gdchamps.com
