Getting to know new PFA President, Nadine Power

Bianca Lapins, Community Relations Officer

Nadine is the new PFA President. We asked her to tell us a little more about herself.

Q: Hi Nadine, what brings you to Kilvington?

A: I’m a busy local mum, working as a Director in a tech startup with two children at Kilvington; Macie in Year 6 and Tate in Year 2.

Both my kids attended ELC at Kilvington then moved onto other schools to start their primary education. However, we happily returned back to Kilvington last year with Macie, and this year with Tate. So while my journey with the School started a while ago, I’m kind of fresh back at Kilvington.

Q: Kilvington’s key character trait for Semester 1 is 'passion'. What are you passionate about?

A: I am passionate about so many things.

Family and friends - I adore spending time with my family and impromptu catch ups with friends are wonderful.

Keeping well - I like to take care of myself, to eat well, and I love running. It allows me to clear my mind and rejuvenates me.

Baking – I love to bake! It is my happy place where I zone out. Whenever I’ve had a tough day, or just want to relax, you will find me close to the KitchenAid.

Crafting – I love being creative, with anything and everything. I could craft all day!

Helping others – I simply enjoy helping others and get much more satisfaction from giving and contributing than I do from being on the receiving end.

Q: For the uninitiated, what is the Kilvington Parent’s and Friend’s Association (PFA)?

A: The PFA is all about helping to develop strong relationships among parents and with the School so we feel connected to each other.

There are so many opportunities for people to get involved including Class Social Representatives (CSRs), volunteering at the secondhand uniform shop (SHUS), cooking a meal for a family in need, helping with Mother’s and Father’s Day breakfasts and gift stalls, and assisting with sausage sizzles and community events, just to name a few.

And guess what? If you are a parent or guardian of a Kilvington student, you are a member of the PFA. There is a small, elected Executive Committee and some program coordinators, however, all parents are encouraged to participate in the wide range of events and activities available to suit their interests, skill set and availability. Each contribution is recognised and very much appreciated.

Q: Why did you decide to become involved with the PFA?

A: I became involved with the PFA as a CSR in my first year at Kilvington. I wanted to make connections with other parents and to help other parents make connections with each other.

As a CSR, I then attended my first PFA meeting where I was welcomed with open arms. It didn’t matter that I was an ELC parent and that I had only been at the School for 5minutes, I

was treated like everyone else from the very beginning. It was a wonderful feeling of inclusiveness, a feeling which I have never forgotten.

So, here I am now as the PFA President. Why? Because I want to play a role in helping others to find their groove, to build relationships and to feel a part of our wonderful community. The past few years have provided challenges in this regard, but thankfully we can now come together, build relationships, and cultivate that all-important sense of belonging.

Q: What is the biggest gift or strength you have received from being involved with the PFA?

A: The feeling of inclusiveness and sense of belonging is the biggest gift of being involved with the PFA. Helping to build an inclusive and warm community where parents, children and staff are welcomed and where relations grow feels wonderful.

I have met so many other parents and staff outside of my cohort and have formed many special relationships since being involved with the PFA. These relationships and experiences have enhanced my experience in so many ways, for me personally and for my family.

Q: What would you say to others who are considering taking up PFA roles or joining activities?

A: We would love to hear from you, or simply see you at a PFA meeting so you can see what it’s all about. Our goal is to build a beautiful, connected community through broadening our relationships, and the PFA is merely a vessel to help you to get to know others.

So jump in to say hi, we would love to see you!

Q: How can others get involved with the PFA?

A: It’s easy! You can sign up for all PFA activities here. If you have any questions please contact Community Relations Officer, Bianca Lapins via lapinsb@kilvington.vic.edu.au.

Q: Finally, can you reveal two truths and a lie about yourself?

A:

I am allergic to cats

I’m currently studying for my MBA

I got mistaken for Shakira when I travelled to Egypt
