Diocesan Athletics Carnival

Last Friday we had a number of athletes travel to Dubbo to compete in the Diocesan Athletics Carnival.  A special mention must go to the following students:

Aliza Cook, Beau Biddle, Lachlan Dunkley, Lincoln Hainsworth, Pollyanna Bailey and Bobby Russell who now will compete at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre at the Polding athletics carnival on the 13th of October.

NSW Catholic Primary Schools Rugby 10s State Finals

On Monday 14th August, we saw our Year 6 rugby 10’s team travel to St Joseph’s College in Sydney to battle it out against representative teams from each Diocese for the Chris Gangemi Cup.

Our first game was up against Christ the King, North Rocks. Catherine McAuley were rewarded for their ability to play to the slippery conditions with a 40-0 win.

The second match saw Catherine McAuley take on St Augustines, Coffs Harbour. The boys showcased some fantastic team efforts and tough defence which saw them take another comprehensive win.

We faced our toughest opponents yet in our third game against Christian Brothers, Lewisham, a very handy team who displayed a great ability to compete in each and every breakdown. As the game saw both teams miss early opportunities to score, it was Catherine McAuley who broke the deadlock with some incredible pace down the sideline. Catherine McAuley were good enough to swing most of the possession their way in the second half and won 28-5.

In our final pool game, Catherine McAuley took on Holy Family from Merewether. The boys played well and enjoyed a 38-0 win and secured a place in the final.

The boys were excited to have the chance to play last year’s champions, and winners of pool B, St Laurences from Forbes.

As it began to sprinkle, the intensity on the field from both teams could be compared to what you would find at the Bledisloe Cup. Strong defence and impressive work in turning over the ball in breakdowns saw both teams share the possession early. However, Catherine McAuley did not let the occasion get to them and on the back of their impressive defence scored a couple of quick tries. Catherine McAuley won the final 28-0, however, the scorecard didn’t do the tight contest any justice. Catherine McAuley are now the State Champions and 2023 Chris Gangemi Cup winners.

A special thanks to all parents, carers and Mrs Jo Flynn who made the trip to Sydney. The boys were well-behaved and displayed fantastic sportsmanship.

Also, a special mention to head coach Mr Scott Hudson who was unable to make the day in Sydney, but his support and encouragement was definitely felt. Both Mr Hudson and Mr Sheridan deserve a thank you for all of their coaching throughout the year.

Well done, boys!
