CIS Representative
Congratulations to Joe Colgan (1st XI Captain) who has been selected in the Combined Independent Schools Representative Team. Joe will play in the NSW Schoolboys Cricket Carnival being held in Maitland during early March.
ISA v CAS at Oxford Falls – Sunday 21 February 2021
The ISA Representative team took on CAS last Sunday. SPX was represented by Joe Colgan (12) as Captain, Liam Chang (12) and Liam Kinna (12); with Mr Rodgers coaching. ISA restricted CAS to 7/189 off 50 overs with Liam Kinna bowling 10 overs 0/26 and Liam Chang bowling 7 overs 0/13. Captain Joe Colgan lead the run chase with 101 (153 balls). Unfortunately, ISA was bowled out for 170.
ISA Round 3 – 1st XI v St Stanislaus College at Oxford Falls #1. SPX welcomed St Stanislaus from across the mountains to our home ground. SPX won the toss and batted but the home side struggled against a persistent attack in compiling just 104 when dismissed all out in the 49th over. Determined to show a lot of fight, Liam Chang (3-22 off 9 overs) and Logan Nicey (1-20 off 7 overs) began well with the ball taking early wickets. Liam Kinna (2-15 off 10 overs) bowled two good spells and took the crucial wicket of the opposition captain who was well caught by Nicey. Late wickets to Colgan (1-13) and Joel Austin (1-8) kept hopes alive but in the 48th over the Bathurst lower order passed our total 8 wickets down.
Please see attached photos.

Basketball
We had some pleasing results on the weekend. Some of our teams who have not seen much success had wins on the weekend. I was also impressed with the spirit and sportsmanship that our Opens teams displayed in their games on Saturday. We only have two rounds to go, including this Saturday. The top two teams in each competition will play a Grand Final on Saturday 13 March at Penrith Basketball Stadium.

NSTA Tennis
After seeing the prediction of a 90% chance of rain it was exciting to see the sun and hear the kookaburras calling. The Pius vs Pius games are always my favourites to watch. The green ball games, which are all Pius vs Pius are often filled with laughs and humour and this weekend was no exception. At one point one of our players was running around the court, troubled by an ant! After some investigation, the ant was located on his person, removed and the games resumed. Never a dull moment at tennis!
Unfortunately, none of our Seniors from the 10.00 am games were available to help out so the Juniors were on their own when it came to umpiring. They did a great job (with a little help from the Mums and Dads watching on). Mrs Keighery as always, was out on the court helping our youngest players with their games, her support on the court is always appreciated.
Matthew Lee and Ethan Auer (SPX 17) had a great run beating Redlands, 18 games to 4. It must have been the day for the Lee family because Justin Lee and Lucas Willems (SPX 26) beat SPX 29, 18 games to 0. Daniel Harper (SPX 22) blitzed it out on the court with some super serves to win his singles 6-0.
A few sprinkles of rain didn’t stop us with the 10.00 am games, the boys were out to win. There were some great rallies on Court 8 with Christian Wong and Lucas Durey (SPX 12) vs Redlands 16. These boys were determined and played some great tennis to claim the win, 2 sets to 1. Equally Aiden Seifert and Lucas Youngman (SPX 6) played exceptionally well losing only 1 game over 3 sets. Congratulations to these 2 young men who were humble in their victory.
Make sure that you log into Xpoint this week to check that your scores have been entered correctly and also to check where you are playing next Saturday. You can access this information on Xpoint:

Senior Swimming Squad
This Saturday February 27 we are competing in the Annual Christian Brothers Carnival held at Ryde Aquatic Centre. Students need to be at the pool by 6.45 pm. They must compete in the school swimming costumes and cap at all times. Each student is permitted to bring one spectator with them. Spectators will be charged $2.40 upon entry. Masks are not mandatory. Spectators will be seated behind our squad but must not mix with other schools' spectators.
The team list is on the Student Noticeboard for the swimmers to see which Events they are in. Some minor changes may need to be made during the evening. I will have a final meeting with all swimmers on Friday morning after the Sports Assembly.
Training continues Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings at Fitness First Chatswood from 7.15 am – 8.15 am. All swimmers are expected to attend at least two training sessions unless they train three times outside of the College. Thank you to all those parents who have emailed in regards to theirs sons training elsewhere.
Looking forward to an enjoyable swimming meet this Saturday.

CSDA Debating Competition
The above debating competition runs through Term 2 on the following evenings. YELLOW CSDA Debating ONLY Registration forms will be available from the student office from Monday 15 February (Week 4).
The 2021 Debating season kicks off this term with:
Week 7 – training Friday 12 March 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm
Week 8 – training Friday 19 March 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm
Week 9 – training & pre-season ‘Friendly’ Debates (to be confirmed) 3.30 pm - 6.00 pm
Week 10 – training & pre-season ‘Friendly’ Debates (to be confirmed) 3.30 pm
The CSDA Competition commences in Term 2. See the following dates.
Last Friday our 2021 Debating Captain, Joshua Jones, was presented to the whole school Assembly. Joshua will be the Captain of a very large and eclectic SPX debating community, which includes a team of 15+ exceptional Year 12 debaters. Joshua is exceptionally capable and profoundly humble – traits that don’t often present equally in a person – but when they do, we meet a man like Joshua: someone with the courage to lead coupled with an empathy that truly ‘sees’ people.
Whilst Joshua loves to win, he acknowledges that debating results can be extremely subjective and that we have all felt the rawness of unjust adjudications. Late on Friday nights Joshua will seek out the teams who are reeling from an unexpected loss and he will work with that team to help them to understand that the greatest success is to develop the courage to face a seemingly unjust decision; to learn from it and to look forward to the next event. Joshua will be an amazing Debating Captain. We are so lucky to have him as our 2021 leader.
If you want to be a part of the terrific St Pius X College debating community it is essential that you attend ALL of the first six rounds. If your team makes it through to the Elimination Round (and beyond) you also need to keep the above dates free.
Our Senior Students act as coaches/supporters for our Junior teams. We are also lucky enough to have ex-students to work with the junior teams as the younger students really enjoy contact with our ex-debating “champions”.
The fee for the CSDA extra-curricular activity is $150.00 which will be included in your Term Two school fees. We keep our fees as low as possible and have funding from the St Pius X College P & F to subsidise the costs of running debating at SPX.
Mrs Michele Waterson - Debating and Public Speaking Convenor
Squash
Last Saturday was the final week of the Swiss draw for Squash and the final week for the Summer Squash season.
The results listed below were the final results from the Swiss draw rounds. We had three young men achieve some individual glory as they played in their second game for the day to battle it out for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
In Division 4 there was an epic battle between our own Luka Krizan and Luke Massa before Luka narrowly took the win. He backed this up by winning the division outright while Luke Massa got 3rd Place. Oliver Mullen in Division 5 also managed to get 3rd Place after two gruelling games. The Division 6 boys (Smith, L.Wong ,Buono, and Yee) all played out their season gracefully and for Wong, Buono and Yee their first Summer season of squash lead to improvement in fitness and gameplay as the season progressed. I would like to thank all the parents and players for their continued support of squash at St Pius X College and we look forward to seeing many of the boys back again for the Winter season at the start of Term 2.
