Mission

Mission Month: Socktober

This week our school is partnering with Catholic Mission by participating in Socktober. We have invited our students to connect with young people experiencing challenges in the developing world through education and the world game of soccer.

This year, our collective fundraising efforts will support vulnerable children in Thailand through a kindergarten run by the Good Shepherd Sisters in Bangkok. The kindergarten provides a caring learning environment for the children and allows their parents, often single mothers, to work and support the family.

Our Year 7 Students have been learning about the children of Thailand in TED Religious Education. Students made their own soccer balls with recycled materials and then participated in the Socktober Shootout. Our 2022 College Captains helped to teach students about Socktober and the children of Thailand. They then facilitated the shootout in houses. The week will finish on Friday with a BBQ at recess led by the SRC.

You can contribute to Mater Dei’s fundraising efforts here. Thank you for your support and for helping your child/ren ‘sock it to poverty!’

Art Competition

The College is currently designing a Reflection Walk in honour of our Founders Nano Nagle and Blessed Edmund Rice. The walk will include six different stations. At each station there will be a plaque, displaying the station name, a QR code and a symbol. The same symbol will be displayed on each plaque and we would like the symbol to be designed by a student at the College.

The poster has more information regarding the Art Competition for designing the Reflection Walk Symbol. Entries are due on Friday 12 November. The winning student will win a $100 voucher at Eckersleys and their design will be displayed on each plaque permanently.

Edmund Rice Foundation Australia: Day of Giving

Our College recently supported Best Foot Forward (BFF) which is an annual fundraising and awareness campaign, highlighting the unique barriers facing women and girls in accessing education.

Funds raised from the campaign directly support Edmund Rice Foundation Australia (ERFA) programs that provide education and skills development so women and girls can build better futures for themselves, their families and their communities.  Watch the campaign video here.

Socktober Prayer

We pray for change: in ourselves and in the circumstances of those in need, particularly in Thailand.
For missionaries, that they will accompany, with compassion, those whose lives are affected by crushing poverty.
For all refugee families, that they will find safe haven and welcome in places that show kindness to strangers.
For the Church in Thailand, that it will continue to work in harmony with its culture and people.
For all those who are affected by the coronavirus pandemic, that they may find relief and recovery.
For Pope Francis, that he will continue to lead the world towards mercy, tenderness, and healing.
God of all people, fill our hearts with your Holy Spirit that we will act justly to rid our world of all that harms our brothers and sisters.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
