It’s so fantastic to have all students back onsite at school. We have missed you!

Whilst there is no doubt the last few months have been challenging, I am sure we can use this time to reflect on the positives that come from difficult situations. It certainly has helped our students build resilience, think more creatively all while becoming more independent learners! These skills will help our students in future years moving into the world of work.

We have continued on with our ‘virtual’ careers program offering a wide variety of opportunities for students throughout the school. Although we have a ‘different view’ of our careers program, in many cases we are gaining access to more resources than usual due to our regional location. For example, sometimes students cannot attend University open days due to travel constraints or commitments, now students can access this information at a time that suits them. Definitely a positive from a difficult situation.

Young Workers Centre

On 19 May our Year 11 and Year 12 VCAL students attended a WebEx webinar which was hosted by the Young Workers Centre. They are a one stop shop for young workers who want to learn more about their rights or who need assistance in resolving a workplace issue. Young Workers Centre has resources aimed at assisting students to understand their rights at work. Students heard from Danielle, who also explained unfair dismissal, bullying and harassment. Danielle stepped students through the Australian Government Fair Work Ombudsman ‘Pay and Conditions' tool. This presentation was extremely useful for our VCAL students and they enjoyed hearing about the Young Workers Centre. RMIT University live stream

Year 10, 11 and 12 students joined a livestream session with RMIT University on 27 May. Students heard about what RMIT has to offer, along with study opportunities and career pathways support. The presentation occurred during students study period to enable them to gain an understanding of what RMIT is about. RMIT also spoke about their ‘Discover what’s next’ virtual events. These events deliver online information sessions about specific courses and pathways. The topics include; Art, Design & Architecture; Mental Health Nursing; Communications, Journalism & Media; Business & Law; Engineering; Surveying; Flight training and Aviation, Science; Computer Science and Information Technology; Fashion; Health & Biomedical Science; Education & Social Science; and Property, Building & Construction. Deakin University Webinars

All campus-based events are now moving to an online format. Their course webinars have been running from May through until July. Students register, discover what it’s like to study at Deakin, meet future teachers, hear from Deakin students and get all the information they need to choose the right course. These webinar events have been posted to students on Compass so they have been able to access the webinars from early May.

These webinars have been running throughout May and June for our students to access. Students can register to hear from academics, professional staff, alumni and current students, and gain insight into what it’s really like to study at Federation University. TIS (Tertiary Information Service)

TIS is a collective of Universities, TAFE institutes and Independent Tertiary Colleges helping students prepare for future careers through events in Victoria. Ordinarily, pre COVID19, Year 12 students would attend this event at Federation University (Gippsland Campus), however it is now offered in an online format. TIS has developed a recorded version which is available on the link below. All Year 12 students have been encouraged to watch this recording. During term 3, more information sessions will be offered regarding the process required to apply for University places and TAFE enrolments.

My Career Portfolio

My Career Portfolio is an online system to support students career journey. It is designed to support students with resources to capture their career goals and plans, share their skills, experiences and accomplishments, and keep all the information they will need to plan their education and career pathways. This recognised career system is one aspect of the career education program required to be implemented by schools. Once students have worked through their portfolio it is stored online and can be accessed and reviewed by the appropriate staff to support students with their career planning. This platform will be a fantastic tool to enable staff to support students with resources and guidance. Our Year 12 students will be the first year level to work through their Career portfolio next week. Other year levels will follow during the second semester.

Year 10 – VET (Vocational Education and Training)

The time has come for Year 10 students to consider what pathway they wish to take as they move into the senior school next year. A few weeks ago, all Year 10 students discussed undertaking a VET subject next year and were also provided with resources to help research this option. My Career Insight (Year 9 Morrisby Career Discovery tool)

During the remote learning our Year 9 students sat a career assessment which involved completing a number quizzes and questionnaires through the Morrisby website. This has produced a detailed careers report which students will be able to access to assist with their career development. During term 3 students will have an interview with an external Careers Consultant to discuss these results. Congratulations to the 104 Year 9 students who have completed this and began their exciting career journey.

Year 10 Work Experience

All Year 10 students will undertake work experience during the week of October 12–16 2020.

At the beginning of term 3, Careers staff will visit all Year 10 classes to discuss work experience; the process and expectations for the students.
