John XXIII College performed impressively in the World Scholar’s Cup Perth Division at Sacred Heart College last weekend.  We fielded 12 teams, four senior and eight junior, and won a total of 100 medals, 52 gold and 48 silver. Our top performing team in the senior consisted of Caitlin Green, Oscar Hegge and Olivia Eastwood, whilst the leading junior team was Genevieve Fergusson-Allen, Natalie Ong and Isabella Boley.  All teams represented the College very well, and seven teams which performed particularly well have been invited to represent the College at the Global round in Sydney.  Special thanks to Ms Kirralee Dawson and Mr Christian Thompson for their wonderful assistance at the event.  A more detailed report on the event is attached separately.

With exams on for Years 10-12, only novice and some of the junior debaters competed in round 4 of the Interschool Debating at Christchurch this week.  The teams had mixed fortunes but continue to improve. Special congratulations to the Year 7 team of Hannah Johnson, Maya Mintz, Wesley Soares and Meg Derbyshire which remains undefeated after four rounds. Warmest thanks to the teachers and parents who are giving such great support to the teams. Debating preparation sessions for round 5 will recommence this Monday morning at 7:15am.

Years 7 and 8 Magis students who are enrolled in the Magis option this semester are working hard to complete the International Baccalaureate style personal projects ready for the display which opens on 26 June at the Magis Awards Breakfast for Semester One where a wide range of trophies and certificates from the Semester One gifted and talented competitions will be presented.  There are many excellent projects, and a full Personal Project Display handbook will be available at this event.

Plans for our Year 12 team which will be competing in the National Jesuit Schools’ debating Championship at Xavier College, Melbourne at the start of next holidays are being finalised and forms will be distributed two students on Tuesday.  At this week’s Secondary Assembly, a number of major Magis awards will be presented to winners in several events.
