Year Seven students of Japanese participate in the United Nations Parade

Our Year 7 students of Japanese have been busy learning about people from throughout the world to present at their very own United Nations Parade. Their task included selecting a character’s name, favourite food, sports and national dress from any country in the world. Each student then presented their ‘international friend’ in Japanese at the parade. The students were fully engaged in the event and spoke very well in Japanese.

A big thank you to Ms Aghdasi for organising this wonderful occasion.

World Environment Day - 5 June 2019

Tree Planting

On World Environment Day 28 students gave up their lunch time to plant Gravelleas, Bonnie Prince Charles, Chorizyma, Agonis and Wild Fire seedlings around the labyrinth area of the College.  It was wonderful to witness the students’ sheer enthusiasm, their ability to listen to instructions and being able to work in harmony with each other and in tune with the living energy of the earth. We are indeed grateful to Mother Earth for the opportunity to grow these plants to enhance and beautify our school environment.

May this famous Native American proverb inspire all in our College Community to act with wisdom and love to bless and preserve our planet:

Treat the earth well. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”

John XXIII Mask Challenge - World Environment Day

As part of World Environment Day Activities, the College encouraged students to take part in the John XXIII Mask Challenge. Inspired by the UN Mask Challenge to raise awareness of and combat air pollution, students signed up to commit themselves to taking one positive action in response to the issue of air pollution and photographed themselves holding up a board identifying what the challenge was.

How much air pollution we breathe in is dependent on many factors, such as access to clean energy for cooking and heating, the time of day and the weather. Rush hour is an obvious source of local pollution, but air pollution can travel long distances, sometimes across continents on international weather patterns.

Nobody is safe from this pollution, which comes from five main human sources. These sources spew out a range of substances including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ground-level ozone, particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbons, and lead–all of which are harmful to human health.

Tasked with completing the challenge in the next two weeks and sharing a photo of themselves doing so, it is hoped that the initiative will encourage and promote amongst members of the College and the wider community an increased concern for the environment, in line with the College motto to ‘Seek Justice’.

Year 12 Hospitality visit Long Chim

Year 12 Hospitality students visited Long Chim restaurant in the State Buildings, Perth City on Thursday. The chef taught them about Thai cuisine, sourcing fresh, authentic produce and were given a first-hand insight into the hospitality industry. Students were given a cooking demonstration from the chef and got hands-on experience preparing fresh curry paste. This was followed by a delicious shared lunch with mocktails. This experience was funded through the hard work of the hospitality students during the Circle of Friends Cafe.

Invitation to families to host one of our exchange students from Japan

In Term 3 we have a group of international exchange students visiting our College from Fujimi High School, Tokyo, Japan. The students arrive on Sunday 28 July (end of Week 1) and are here for two weeks, leaving on Saturday 10 August. They are all female students aged approximately 15-16 years old.

Their purpose for coming to the College is to experience life in Australia and practice speaking English.

Please refer to letter below giving you more information about the exchange and a Host Family Application Form. Please return the completed Application Form with images of your family at your earliest convenience.

Hosting is a wonderful opportunity to share your home with someone from Japan and make a life-long friend with someone who lives in Tokyo. Opening your home to someone from another country will expand your understanding of another culture.

Many thanks to the Host Families that have already completed forms and sent them in by email. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

This will be our 21st Exchange with Fujimi High School! The length of our relationship reflects the value, loyalty, strength and success of the program.
